KFX400 - First ride impressions
#1
WOW - I'm impressed. The dealer says don't go past half throttle for 10 hrs - so I'm doing my best to do abide.
Even though - the thing's got great torque. Easy wheelies with a little stab of the throttle - and just a little clutch and gas will get it right up in second gear.
We climbed some pretty good hills yesterday, as well as rode some shallow water holes and mud. Some posters are right about the fact that the bike lugs a little in second gear, but will be reving too high in first for some situations I was in. I think second gear is probably geared right, but first is probably too low.
I'll probably end up going down 1t on the countershaft sprocket. I don't care if I lose a little on the top. This will make 1st gear a total grunt gear, and make second much better on the hills.
Other than that - no complaints here. Powerslides, hills, berms...they're all a blast.
I did notice it doesn't like to be wheelied through water at speed - unlike a dirt bike. The tires float across the water, and the quad likes to get a little crooked and come down pointing you in another direction other than where you were going before you hit the water - lol
I was initially unsure whether I should get a sport/ute quad or this. I'm glad I went this way!!

Congrats on the new quad!
I have said before and still think that for the money the LTZ/KFX/DVX 400 quads are the best all around quads out there. The new Raptor 700 is an awsome quad too but about $2grand more than my KFX's were.
For gearing dropping to a 13 front will work. People used to go to a 13/41 combo before the ez chain adjust was added, adjustment wasn't needed with that combo.
If U are gonna do any mods, most people do at some point, FULL exhaust and a K&N filter with rejetting according to exhaust manufacterer, are the first recommended step and that will uncork about 4-5hp.
I would stay away from riding fast into water. Had a buddy and seen some others get really messed up when the water acted like a cement wall and sent them flying.
Hope U have as much fun as I have had on mine going on 2 and a half years with mine and still loven it.

go ahead and drop the front sprocket 1 tooth like meischeech said it will give you alot more torq. you'll lose alittle off the top but you really don't need it. mine felt stronger through all gears. sprocket should run you like $12. so many mods for these bikes!!!!
