are there any differences between the engines on these two year models

 

Nope, all that is different is the new silver color and the graphics are a little different. If you can get a good deal on the 05 then go for it, I just picked up mine this week, got a great deal. I really wanted silver but hey, money talks so I went with the red. Good luck, you'll love it.

 

on that note, the 650 06 model is now available with IRS. It looks like the old swingarm is on the way out.
