Took out both prairies over the weekend and noticed on the 400 the right side CV boot was torn and all the grease came out. I rode through alot of mud and water before I noticed it. The steering didnt feel quite right. I pulled on the joint and axle and everything feels tight like nothing was broke. Can I just put another boot on and add grease and call it good or is it probably shot? Also any tips on fixing would be appreciated. Ive never messed with the CV joints before so not sure what the easiest way to go about it is.

Also its scheduled to go in for the recall work, will they need to take this apart anyway? if so I will just buy a new boot and let them put it on while its apart. Thanks

 

Is the CV making a clicking sound when you turn the wheel all the way and drive it? If so, I'm guessing its shot. If not, you may get lucky and just need to replace the boot and the grease. If I were you, I'd just ask the dealership to inspect it when you have it taken in for the recall work...perhaps they can tell if it has too much slop/wear and tear already.

Thanks, Its not making any noise that I can tell, my freind that was riding it said it was pulling from side to side so I checked it. I didnt feel anything but did notice the tear. (It actually always feels a little sloppy to me compared to the 650).

 

This happened to me on the left side and I didnt catch it in time. The damage was allready done though and it didnt take long to start clacking around every turn. I ended up buying an entire new half shaft with new CV joints and boot kit, for 178 bucks from a guy called "thecvman" on Ebay. I think he is around these forums too. Its an overall easy job. The dealer will have to take loose the control arm and replace the knuckle, and it wouldnt be too much more to throw a boot kit on it. Depends on your dealer though.
