P650 Question
#1
Hello all, I just joined this forum. I've spent some time reading posts on here prior to joining. Decided to jump in and join you guys. I ride an 01 Prairie 400 4wd. I am currently looking at an 03 P650 with 750 miles and in immaculate condition. It runs great but makes a terrible squalling noise coming from belt area. Makes it only at 7mph and below speed up and it stops. They said it's done this since it was new. The dealer they bought it from tried to fix but said it was normal. It belongs to our Preacher's wife and just got back from another dealer getting the recall taken care of. While there they tried to fix the noise. Checked clutch, tranny, brakes and belt but wound up saying it was just going to be there. Doesn't sound normal to me. Please give me some advice on this. Price $3500.

that is normal my 03 has done it since i got it . that is a heck of a deal. i will buy if you don't! throw my mods on and you will be kicking butt and taking names. oh by the way do you have directions for a snorkle?

emt, I looked at an '04 P650 and it didn't make the squeeling noise. The noise on this one's pretty loud and sounds like something's tearing up. Get past 7MPH and it's gone. I do a lot of agricultural spraying and lots of my driving is below 7mph. Is your noise loud too?

my 01 makes a little noise on take off and really slow riding, still running though , try to use low range, that is what i would use for agg. work and carrying a lot of weight at a low speed .
the belt may have been glazed when broken in or just dirty mabye ??

1 of 3 things. A loud screetch is not normal.
1 Belt loose
2 KEBC dead
3 KEBC bearing dead
Belt is $35
KEBC is $200, but you can just override
KEBC bearing is $30 or you can simply replace the cover for like $70
I bought my 03 with 40 hours and 140 miles with windshield, plow, and plow actuator for $4200. Was showroom shape.
You will love the 650.
If you hear the screetch only in forward gears and NOT reverse then you are looking to solve KEBC or KEBC bearing. If you hear it after the engine is off and during the KEBC noises then its the KEBC and not the bearing. Lots of these quads see the bearing go bad. Simply replace the cover on the primary as it comes from Kawi with a new bearing or pull the cover and drift out the bearing. There are tests you can do to test the KEVC actuator. If thats bad I would just pull the fork out of it, but you can also buy a new actuator. I had to pull mine apart, clean and lube it and works fine.
Buy a service manual that will help you a ton.

I am totally disgusted by my EX-dealer's service. I took my 02' 650 Prairie in for the steering knuckle recall. I have a new set of Swamplites on this machine. When I got home I noticed a huge toe-in on the alignment. Measured @ 2.500 inches. I took It back, they "fixed it" by adjusting it to 1.800 inches'
toe-in. My thought is that much toe-in will really eat up my new tires. I set it myself @ zero toe-in. What is the best service manual? Any comments on my alignment issues? Any easy to do hop-ups to this machine I can do? I love this wheeler and want to maintain it and enhance it myself.

Wouldn't hurt to check the belt for the correct tightness. You can either let the Dealer do it or do it yourself. Check out the NYROC page for instructions on doing the belt. http://atv.dnsalias.com
Now my BF750s belt will do that too but only when I get on the Brakes in a panic stop and going way too fast to begin with.

Nyroc's info web page will tell you about the noise.
My '02 650 Prairie went through 3 belt in 1000 miles of hard riding. Then I tightened belt beyound specs to little under 1/2" deflection. The belt would squeal in gear sitting still. so put in netural, when ready to ride put in gear and go. This belt was still in with 3000 miles on it.
By the someone said '01 650 Prairie?
Buy the '03 650, its a great deal.
