this is my first atv,i picked it up for 200 bucks and it has some problems .the biggest problem is i have no fire.the electic start dosent work so i figure to get it to run with the recoil then figure out the electric start.i have 12v going into the coil under the seat one wire is green with a white tracer the second wire is a black with yellow tracer both have 12v.i am a little confused how the ign. system works. the engine has excellent compression and gas to the carb.can someone explain to me how to get fire?i pulled the plug and grounded it so i am sure there is no fire when cranking

The coil has 2 small wires. 1 of the wires is "hot" when the ignition is turned on. The other wire goes to a triggering device (as points do in an older auto) that makes and breaks contact to ground with the rotation of the engine. This is what creates the spark.
Use a test light and touch it to each of those 2 wires at the coil. With the ingition "on", rotate the engine. One of the wires should stay "on" constantly. The other wire should cause the test light to blink. If it doesn't blink, then there is something wrong with the triggering device.
Let us know what you find!

If the wires are still connected, then you will see voltage on both sides of the coil, youre just seeing the voltage come thru the coil, which is normal.
I dont have a service manual for that quad, but maybe someone else does, Theres a troubleshooting guide for figureing out the problem, in the manuals,
If no one else helps out, check ebay for a used manual, or try the local library for a copy. Itll be in the 629.2 area of non fiction.

ive got a 97 bayou. I checked the voltage with the wires off ,constant power to both wires. the trigger device you all refer too, is it housed in the coil or is it the black box on the front of the frame below the hood?
If i am trying to start it with the recoil(to see if i can get the bike to run)wouldnt i get fire from a magneto to the coil and basically bypass the electronics?

If you have constant power to the ignition coil with the key on bike not running, then you have a DC CDI ignition system. There is one wire going to the coil from the battery, the other goes from the coil to the CDI box. There is an SCR inside the CDI box that must recieve a small voltage signal from the pulsor coil in order to shunt the battery to coil circuit. The collapsing magnetic field inside the ignition coil is what provides the spark.
Check the pulse coil for A/C voltage.
