Boot Question...
#1
Hello:
I was just looking over my Bayou 300 4x4, and I noticed a small hole in the top of the boot that covers the joint where the rear drive shaft connects to the engine. Is this a CV joint or a U joint??? will it cause me problems if I just leave the hole there??? If so, how can I fix it without taking the rear end apart to replace the boot??? HELP PLEASE!!!
Thanks in advance
Jack

you fo sho need to fix it!! the only way, if you don't want to get dirty and tear everything apart, is take it to the shop and let them do it.... thats one of them things that there is only one fix. change the thing before you get into some change$$$$$$$$

Hello:
I fixed it!!! it was just a small tear about a half an inch long. It was on the top of the boot, verry close to the engine (still trying to figure out how that got there) I removed the two clamps that hold the boot on, and pulled the boot back so I could inspect it further. I also discovered that this thing has a CV joint in the back. (werd, most shaft drive quads have U joints in the back) I inspected the joint, it was fine, no dirt or grit in it. I added some extra greese to the joint just to be sure it was well lubed. I then inspected the boot for any other tears or punctures, it was fine except for the one I allready new about. The boot is in good shape, it's still soft, no cracks or signs of wear. Anyway, I used some clear silicone sealant (like the stuff you would use to seal a window or door) and put it on both sides of the tear and let it dry. Vola! it fixed it. I checked it after it dryed to make sure it was'nt going to peel off or anything, and it worked great! Thanks for the tips guys. I thought I would share this info in case anyone else ever has to fix a boot.
Thanks
