All it would take to run efi on the existing engine would be to bolt it up and program it. It's a single intake runner, the only hard part is the tuning.
Sure it's likely to a modified bottom end designed for the extra reverse gear, counterbalancer, and other normal changes that have taken place in the vast majority of motorcycle engine conversions to atv duty.
Take a look at the pictures of the atv and kx450f bike, the engine is the same from the jug up, and a lot of the bottom end lines up as well.

The only thing that lines up is the color and the top end. The whole bottom is completely reversed. Not the same. If you dont think so, check out these pictures on the following websites.

most of the engines are derived from dirtbikes b/c thats historically where the R/D went.
however i think we are finally seeing the atv side catch up a little more, a little quicker than in the past...but for the most part, the engines still start off in the dirtbike world then are 'adapted' for atv use.
the 04/05 TRX450R had a disticntly different and 'tamer' engine than the CRF version; most all the internal components were different. it wasnt until the 06 model that honda pretty much gave it the CRF-X's engine, still with only slight mods for atv use.
yamaha pretty much gave the YFZ the YZF's engine with a timing change on one of the cams and they "beefed" up and altered some things in the tranny if i remember the initial comparison and press release on it corectly from 2003. if im off on this one, jump in and let me know...
but until the final specs are relased on the atv version of the KFX450, judgement should be suspended until then on what they actually DID in the engine department. otherwise peple argue for days over it...unless someone can locate or sneak some more pics and specs out for us! we are all eager to see this bike. im glad its coming out, kawasaki deserves a their own winner in the sport arena, and if they did this one right, they will have it. Like i said earlier in this thread or another, kawasaki is capable of building a kick@ss engine!
