Default Replaced Outer boot on BF750

FYI

I tore up the right outer CV boot on my BF750. A piece of baling wire got wrapped around it and ouch. Anyway, for those who would like to know, here is how I replaced it. By the way, the boot for a '95 Saturn coupe fits, is thicker, and costs about $8.00 at O'reilly's.

1. Loosen lug nuts.
2. Jack up front end.
3. Remove wheel.
4. Remove axle nut (it takes an impact wrench)
5. Remove upper ball joint using nut and hammer. Wack it good!
6. Remove the small screw that holds the brake line to the upper a arm.
7. If you pull the steering knuckle to the rear, and the axle to the front while pushing it back into the diff, there is just enough room for the axle to come out of the knuckle.
8. Once the axle is out of the knuckle, give it a tug and it will come out of the front diff. No fluid should come out of the hole in the diff.
9. Remove the damaged boot, DO NOT CUT THE STRAPS THAT ARE HOLDING THE DAMAGED CV BOOT. THESE CAN BE REUSED AND ARE MUCH EASIER TO USE THAN THE ONES THAT COME WITH THE NEW BOOT. They come off real easy if you open the little retaining tabs with a small screw driver.
10. After the damaged boot has been removed, you can see the CV joint. Take a hammer and strike the CV at the point where the axle goes into the joint. There is a retainer in there that will release after a good wack or two. Do not wack the ***** or ball retainer rings or bad things could happen.
11. The joint will pop off after a few wacks allowing access to the axle to get the new boot on. Use the old retainer rings if you can. If not, the new ones can be tightened using wire cutters.
12. Put the axle back into the joint, line up the splines, and give it a push. It will slide back into place and lock in.
13. Put the grease that came with the new boot on the joint, put the boot in place, and install the retaining straps.

The rest of it goes back together the way it came apart. Use an impact wrench to torque down the axle nut if you don't have a big torque wrench.

You might have to put pressure on the bottom of the ball joint to hold it until there is enough tension to keep the ball from spinning as you tighten it down.

Very easy. It's about a 30 minute job if you have everything ready to go.

Default Replaced Outer boot on BF750

Great information however I have a couple questions for you... I have the exact same machine with a ripped boot so this wouild be very helpful. How exactly do I use the bolt and hammer to remove the ball joint? That's where I'm stuck... I have already worked it to the point where I lost the packing in it so now I have a ripped CV boot and a ball joint that needs to be replaced as well I would imagine. So far I am causing more issues than solving them.

after I get the ball joint off it sounded like the axle would come off, did I interpret that correctly?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Dave
