300ex Paddles - Size? Brand? need help
I have a 1993 300ex, Stock except for larger head pipe and air filter. I am takin it out to silver lake next weekend and was wonderin what brand and size of paddle tire I should get. Currently I am looking into ITP sand stars + wheels but I dont know if i should get the 8 inch or 9 inch rim. Any suggestion, including any mods I might want, THANKS

My son and I just got back from Silver Lake a few weeks ago, I put Gecko paddles on the back of his, I had some 8" rims sitting around, so I put 21x11x8's on, looked and worked great, and only 29.99 each from Rocky Mt ATV. You can also get a great deal on a rim/tire kit from them, I don't think the 9 or 8 would make much of a difference, there would be less flex with the 9" rim, maybe better for traction, I'm not sure.

I agree, the 300ex is a bit light on HP for using sand tires. If you have good dirt tires, you might be better of just using them. I used the sand stars, and i think if i had a worn out pair...they would have been better. The tall lugs, and number of lugs, can really kill horsepower, and the sand is a real killer of horsepower all on its own.
I have an almost identicle 300, and it didnt want to pull 5th gear, with paddles on, and it really didnt have any low end either...it would just hammer and shake, unless you got the rpms up, and did some clutch slipping. I got sick and tired of them, and went back to the rear tires i had (stock rear tires from a 450r) there are lots of take off tires from 450r out there, which work very well on the 300, and i could go about 90% of the places, on the sand, where the paddles would take it. So youre not giving up much, by using sock tires, providing they have good tread, and are low on air pressure.
Make sure you bring along the stock tires...in case you become disappointed in the sand tires.
If you dont mind giving up some topend speed, and giving up a bit of ground clearance, you might want to try the 18 inch tires, but dont go over 20 inch. This helps the gearing, to go smaller.
Id be tempted to try the 18 inch geccos, which are designed for low horsepower machines.

My son's 300ex had little problem with the Geckos on, but we did swap the Fast Trekkers back on before we left, he said they climbed the hills just as good, and he could get more wheel spin, while the Geckos dug down a lot more, but that's what you get a sand tire for, traction. All in all, the Geckos worked fine, but standard tires work pretty good for all but the steepest hills there.
