Might just be that the belt is loose.

Steady ON belt light means that time (every 100 hrs) is up for CVT inspection/maintenance, not just the belt. It is just a reminder light. It has nothing to do with the actual condition of the belt. It will come ON no matter what, every 100 hr interval.

Alwayride is correct, there are issues with the belt light reliability. I also have an 04 KFX700, ran the crap out of it for over two years and the belt light never came on (I know it was well over 100 hours). I replaced the belt myself not due to a light or any loss of performance; I was just hopping it up and didn't want a possible used belt to be an issue. So if the light bothers you and there's no loss of performance just reset as Alwayride said....

You should always inspect the CVT system and take necessary action (adjust/replace/luburicate) when the belt light is either steady ON or flashing, instead of just resetting it.

How reliable is the belt light itself?
Very reliable - it comes on every 100 hrs of actual running time. The dash meter hour-clock is not, because it counts the igniton on time whether the engine is running or not.

Were you using low gear when you were supposed too?
