I'm having this same problem with my 2001 prairie 650 but with the low gear not the high gear. How did you adjust the shift linkage?

Hogan,
If tightening the motor mount didn't fix your problem (which I doubt), you may have to split the case to find out. I am thinking there is a fault some where along the transmission input shaft, like a broken star dog (like a spacer) or a snap ring out of groove (not keeping the gears in place anymore). This is assuming the popping is occuring inside the engine case not the front diff gear box.

Breck,
To adjust the shift linkage, you will need to remove the dummy gas tank cover. It is the adjustable tie-rod shaft which connects bewteen the bottom of the shift **** and rear of the engine/trans case. Usually you want to shorten the tie-rod by turning the nut about 2 turns.

Default 650 Prairie Help

i've seen this on both our 650 and 700 there are some bearing that go bad on the rear swing arm i think. we got one quad fixed and the dealer and it coasted like over $700 but when my brothers started we did it our selves and parts was under $100 but its a long prosses. but what was happening to our quads was it was jumping out of high and also when you where under a load it would jump almost like a chain jumping a sproket, replaced some bearings and seals and the problem was gone.

hope that helps

I can see that being the answer. The swingarm bearing setup on these machines is a crappy design that lets water in to the bearings and causes them to rust up and break into pieces. That causes a lot of play in the swingarm and could be the problem.

i replaced the swingarm bearings 3 weeks ago, it didnt help with the problem thou, but they were bad. the left side bearings came out in pieces, most of the pieces were in the swingarm. i was lucky just had to replace the bearings and races.

When water fills inside the swingarm, the swingarm pivot bearings are likely to fail because they are not sealed type. Also, the bearings are not serviceable. You need to replace them when they go bad, hopefully before the swingarm itself gets all messed up.
