P650 Low/High gear question
#1
Was just reading some posts seems people talk about leaving your
bike in low range most of the time?
Most of the riding i'll be doing will be around 15 to 25 mph in mountain
trails so just leave the bike in low range all that time?
I thought that low range was mainly for up steep hills or down or pulling
heavy loads at low speeds was what i thought.
I have a 2002 P650 vtwin.
Just rode it about 10 miles or so since i got it and never put it in low range yet
just for a few hills just to test it out if there something i need to know let me
know please just like to keep up things since i don't know very much about
the bigger bikes and the 4 wheel drive.

Drive in low, or replace the belt. The kawi is geared high, so you have to drive in low at those speeds. I drive in low up to about 40mph, at short runs. If i do 40 or higher for a long straight run, i will cruise in high. I have 1200 miles on my stock belt, with no wear yet

It all depends on the load that your quad is trying to overcome.
If you are riding on a flat hardpacked ground or going down hill, there is no need to use the lo gear. But if you are pulling a trailer, the lo gear is recommended. If you are going through mud/snow/sand or uphill or doing rock climbing, use the lo gear as well. Not only the $70 belt, but the much more expensive coverter will last longer as well.
