Default 87 mojave 250 reverse issue

Do it yourselfers:

I am trying to get the reverse safety switch to actually function on an 87 mojave 250. The problem is if I downshift from 1st it WILL go into reverse without pulling the reverse release on the handlebars. All of the reverse components including cable etc are new because I thought they were the problem. It still doesnt work right. So any tips advice etc would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scuff

Pull the transmission cover off and take a look to see if anything seems bad in there or if a spring or somthing is out of place. Someone with a mojo would know a bit more because the rev. setup on a lakota is a bit diffirent.

check the spring, at the lock mechanism. the little tab, thats toward the front, if its "on top". this is kinda hard to explain. but if u look, theres an edge, it should be "beside" it, if its "on top" it wont pull it back. it binds it a little. i just went through all this last friday.

i dont have any pics. but once u get in there. u should be able to see what im talking about.
i used a screwdriver, and popped it into place.
good luck
