Hi folks, just joined and have been reading thru trying to solve my problem.
Have some ideas from reading...but would like to ask my question for hopefully a definitive answer.

2000 lakota.....has been running great till battery died the other day. Did the pull start and all was well riding for about an hour. Lakota died and she would start on pull again, but no power and would only idle rough. put her in the garage overnight. She pull started next day (with backfiring) and would run for 15min, then starting losing power and fell back to the no power and idling rough only.

Carb was cleaned 3 mo's ago and needle replaced due to fuel leakage.

After starting the engine by either pull start on the original dead battery or a new battery, measure the voltage at the battery terminal. You should have 13+ volts if your charging stystem is working correctly. As you increase the rpm, the voltage reading should increase as well up to 14+ volts near the WOT. Engine might be dying because of poor charging system. You should get a new battery no matter what.

Wow lakota topics have really died out lately. Sorry for the late reply... I used to have a lakota, and I loved that thing.

It sounds like your carb got some dirt in it... but then again.. could be the charging system. Or both, for that matter! Go ahead and clean out the jets mainly, but the whole carb. Then check your air filter, make sure its nice and tacky, but clean enough. Hopefully you have it fixed by now so you can get out and ride again, but if not, hope this helps!!!

 

Your charging system is bad. Do like Hyashi said. And from now on try not to run anything on a dead or weak battery - it will burn up the charging system. Alternators are NOT BATTERY CHARGERS!
