my friend has an 06 bayou 250 and claims that in the owners manual that it says it will go 80 mph and i say yeah..right i have an eiger which i think tops at bout 55-60 and we tryed to compare and iwas doin about 45 and he was still pullin away until we ran out of road so yeah what do u think

I ran the numbers on an excell speadsheet using the gear ratios and 9000 rpm. With 25 inch tires I have, it will go over 60. I don't think it has enough power to pull 80 though. No way with stock tires... It can't rev high enough. I'd say 50 with stock tires is about it.

I have a '01 Bayou 220 for one of my sons that is bored .5mm over, which is half way between a stock Bayou 220 and a stock Bayou 250. All other parts in a Bayou 220 and Bayou 250 are identical. It has a Wiseco piston (which is stock compression ratio by the way), a modified Honda 400 EX muffler and has been rejetted with a KN jet kit. It also has 23" Dirt Devil tires front and rear. It runs really good for a B220. It will slightly outrun my 01 Prairie 300 4x4 (which weights about 150 lbs. more and is full time 4x4). Top speed on the B220 is around 45 verified, by GPS.
There is no way a stock Bayou 250 will run 60 mph on level ground. (Maybe if you had it in the back of a pickup!) 5th gear in a B220/250 is pretty low. The engine simply doesn't have the power or the rpm capability to go that fast. Most atv speedometers are off...some are WAY off. The next time someone tells you his B250 will go anywhere from 60-80, just turn and walk away...he doesn't know what he's talking about.

The gear ratios for the 220 are as follows:
1st = 2.923
2nd = 1.684
3rd = 1.174
4th = 0.923
5th = 0.786
The primary drive ratio is 3.45 and the final drive ratio is 4.08
Therefore, if we assume an rpm of 9000 and a tire size of 25 inches, the top speeds in each gear are:
1st = 16.27
2nd = 28.24
3rd = 40.51
4th = 51.52
5th = 60.52 (maybe a little faster due to tire growth)
With 22 inch tires its:
1st = 14.32
2nd = 24.85
3rd = 35.65
4th = 45.34
5th = 53.26
With a bore and stroke of 67x61 there is no reason to believe the bayou won't rev to 9000rpm (peak stock HP is at 7500, so 9000 is not much of a stretch). My bayou is bored 1mm over and I milled .050 off the head. I have 190psi cranking pressure and I installed a 26mm carb from a suzuki 230 quadsport. I runs REALLY good!

JustRandy...sounds like you have a fun toy! I think you and I are on the same page here. My comments were that a stock B220 or B250 won't come close to going 60, so buck1992 should have plenty of ammo to visit with his friend about the speed capabilities of a stock B250.
By the way, will a 25" tire fit on the rear of a B220? My 23" Dirt Devils are a little close and they aren't a full 23" tire. Just curious.

It might be fun if it weren't for the single arms in front, lol. So, I ended up making a plow from a 1/2 inch sheet of steel and trailer jack. I added a winch and connections for an external battery that sits on the rack. Its ALL workhorse now. I use the plow to keep my trails in order (it never snows here) and I winch a lot of logs around in an effort to clean my property up some.
For 25 inch tires, you would have to extend the rear shocks an inch or so to get full rear travel without rubbing. Its been a while now,,, but it seems like I had the 25s on and did ok until I rode a buddy double. Then it was rubbing pretty bad, so I sawed the tops off the shocks and welded in more metal to make them longer. Would have been easier to just get longer shocks off ebay or something, but I never miss an opportunity to hone my reckneck engineering skills.
I'll see if I can find some pics.

I grew up on a farm in Nebraska. Most farmers live by the idea that if it doesn't fit, it will in about an hour from now - "where's that chop saw and welder?"
You're like me in that I wouldn't want to be driving a B220 at 60 and especially at 80 anyway. The steering and suspension leave a little to be desired. Pretty decent in 1988 when they came out, but there are a lot better ideas today. All in all though we've got a lot of good out of the B220 and had a lot of fun with it. My 12 year old will probably use it for another year before he moves up to something bigger. We've got a 9 year old that will probably start riding it then. (He'll be almost 11 by then.) My wife even likes bombing around on it.

Winching up a stump. You can see the big battery on the rear rack. Also, it appears I added some truck mudflaps cut into 8 inch strips and screwed to the plastic.

I somehow managed to get stuck while out with my camera. I don't recommend that! Not easy to get off the quad n not get wet while protecting the cam and also carrying a winch cable. But here you can see I added an old 18 volt drill to raise n lower the plow. And a better veiw of the mudflaps.

Just a view of the 25 inch swamplites.

The plow when I first put it on. Also, the truck headlight and car fog lights (stock light stopped working and blew bulbs when they got wet, so they're junk).... and I like having a light that turns with the bars. And it shows the 23 inch tires in front.

Its hard to remember all the stuff I've done to this thing.

Couldn't tell you how many times I've flipped over the bars because of that plow! I'm a little intimidated to ride very fast with the plow on. Even when fully up, the front shocks can still dive down and the plow can grab a root. The roots usually win!
