Water in belt cover?
#1
Does anyone know how to keep water out of the belt cover?
I do alot of driving in wet conditions, through rivers, large puddles, etc.... and even with a new cover gasket (properly tourqued) if still takes in water.
(AND how much noise is normal from the cover. Bike works fine, but cover seems noisy?).

Was it noisy before you took on water or after you replaced the belt/clutch cover gasket ?
If not the belt/clutch could be rubbing the cover , i've heard of this problem before ; and if i'm not mistaken it was a streached belt are the clutch needed shims added to the clutch to tighten the belt back to spec's. it turned out to be the belt slapping againt the cover !
You can snorkle the air intake vent with pvc pipe and bring it up through the plastic's in front of the handle bars , i've seen others do this to their quads to keep water from the belt housing ; they also added this pvc pipe to the air intake to the carburator so they could go through water up to the seat of their quads !
I have a 2006 Arctic Cat 400 FIS Auto i bought Feb. 7th 2006 , this cat is the biggest chassie i've ever seen for the 400 class quad ; and it's the tallest that AC build's it's the same size chassie as the 700 EFI and the Thunder Cat 1000 has the same size chassie it only has a 2 inch longer wheel base than the 400 !
The day i brought the AC 400 Auto home i rode over to a creek that lead up to this big private lake with my brother who was riding my first quad a 1986 Honda TRX350 Foreman 4x4 that i sold him in Nov. 2005 , when he came down to my house and pulled the Foreman up to the front of the Cat it was a foot and a half higher than his front rack ; when we started up the creek we came to a deep pool that we alway's had to leave the creekbed and go around this deep spot and get back into the creek but this time when my brother went around the bank i just plowed on through this deep part of the creek !
When My brother saw me going through this deep part of the creek he looked shocked that i would go through this deep water with my new quad , but the water only came up to the bottom of the floorboards of the Cat ; it would almost come up to the seat of the Foreman !
When we got to the spillway my brother started around this pile of rubble of big rock's and concrette from the old spillway , there was this spot at the spillway that use to be the old drainage ditch where they would drain the lake every 20 yrs. to rebuild the Dam ; we had been going through this drainage ditch a week before and i couldn't figure out why my brother was going around the ditch !
Instead of going through the ditch he was going through this rough pile of rock's and concrette , i stopped at the ditch and asked my brother why he didn't go through the ditch like we alway's did before ; he told me the ditch was deeper than it use to be i still didn't think it looked to deep to go through so i started to go on through when my front wheel's dropped off in the ditch water came up to the bottom of my headlight's !
My brother looked at me his eye's got big at the sight of me in this deep water i just went right on through the ditch and up to the top of the spillway were i stopped and shut off the engine and waited for my brother to get up to the spillway , when he got up to where i had stopped he said i didn't believe you would go through that deep ditch with your new Cat ; i told him i didn't think it was that deep and desided to go for it !
After i got home i read the owner's manual where it said what to do if you got water in the belt/clutch cover housing , there's a plug on my AC 400 to remove to drain water from the belt housing ; i went out to the quad and removed the plug started the engine and reved the engine a few time's like it said to do in the manual but no water came out of the drain hole !
The next day i caaled my Dealer and ask her how deep is to deep for the Cat , she told me the intake vent is high up under the front plastic's near the handle bar's ; i told her about the ditch i went through and how deep the water was she told me if water didn't come out the drain hole it didn't get any in the intake vent !
She told me that i was safe to go through water this deep as long as i didn't go to fast through it , on the Honda Foreman you couldn't go through water a foot above the footpeg's ; if you did you would get water in the metal fuel tank mounted under the seat !
I had to replace the fuel tank on the Foreman because i use to ride this deep creek with my cousin i got water into the fuel tank and didn't know i got any in it untill it was to late my cousin had a 1989 Suzuki LT4WD 250 Quad Runner that was smaller than the Foreman ; and he didn't have to worry about getting water in his fuel tank because it was on top like a motorcycle tank and his Suzuki would float with him on it alone !
We rode up and down this creek all summer of 1990 , until beaver Damed up the creek ; i don't know where the intake vent is on your Kawasaki but i would think it would be high up in front near the plastic's at the bottom of the rack !
Do a search on the Kawasaki forum for snorkling my Kawasaki's belt and air intake vent housing , you should find a thread with a link that will show you how and what you need to snorkle you Kawasaki ; there are some for Arctic Cat AUto's the vent housing may be the same as the Arctic Cat's 650 V Twin because it has the Kawasaki 650 V Twin Engine !
Good luck getting it snorkled this is what i would do if i was riding creek's and river's , i haven't been riding the creek my cousin and i use to ride together a few year's before he passed away in late 1999 ; after he passed away i lost not only a cousin , best freind and riding partner !
We rode together during the week as well as on week end's , we were both disabled me having lost both leg's just below the knee's in 1975 when i was hit from behind while trying to help my freind push his Dad's car out of the road after he ran out of gas another car came up behind me going to fast and catch me between the bumper's !.....

Not really a rubbing noise but more of "normal" belt moving type noises. Just got the machine last week and not familiar with the Kawi systems. I'm assuming the belt adjustment is ok. It runs fine but I think I'll take the cover off and re-check it to be sure.

The water proof belt housing is suppose to be water tight from new but you should check them once and awhile.
It just involves a belt cover with 2 breather hoses ,one for air intake and one for air exhaust that connects to the belt cover. If the belt cover seal is on right and the 2 air hoses are on right it cant take in water unless you go through water deeper then the 2 hoses intakes which are at gas tank hight.
When I but my cover on I use liquid gasket alone with the gasket for the cover. My hoses have only one clamp holding it on the cover ,so I add a additional 2 clamps plus added liquid gasket to those connection also.
It never leaked when stock but liquid gasket and extra hose clamps are cheap and quick to apply.

I think i read that the AC 650 V Twin was a little noisy , they said it was the nature of the beast ; but someone like v2rider would know more about than i do !
TLC do you have your 2001 SP 500 HO snorkled ?
I don't ride the deep creek me and my cousin use to ride mainly because i lost my cousin in late 1999 from a massive heart attack , and i don't have anyone to ride with on the weekdays anymore ; i miss my cousin he loved to ride his litte Suzuki LT4WD 250 Quad Runner !
He bought 2 Suzuki's the first was a 1989 Suzuki LT250 Quad Runner and the second was a 1993 Suzuki LT4WD 300 KQ , he bought the 300 KQ 2 weeks before the blizzard of 93' ; he would've loved an auto like Polais are Arctic Cat he had trouble shifting gears on the Suzuki's because of the play in the transaxle !......

We do not hit water deep enough to bother with snorkels and I can not afford to lose the front rack space,I need every inch of it for our fishing trips.
