Shocks for a 98 300 4x4

Shocks for a 98 300 4x4
Okay, so I've got this 98 Kawasaki 4x4 Bayou, and it needs shocks bad. But the local shop said it would be 300 bucks for each shock. Those are the OEM replacements! 1200 bucks for shocks? Jebuz...
So I took one of the shocks off tonight, and I can't for the life of me figure out why in the world I couldn't just put any shock (granted as long as it was the same length and size of course) on it. Why not?
Can anyone explain? It looks like any other shock.
