STREET LEGALIZATION!
#1
Does anyone have any information on how to legalize atv's for the street?
I've heard over and over that highway riding would be insane (which is debateable), but I'm just talking for cruising around.
I live in Michigan, and I'm sure either way, I will have tons of homework to be done, but I was just curious to see if anyone had any info. GAS is very expensive as everyone knows, and I don't like riding bikes. Besides, I think those spyders look kinda...meh...
Thanks guys

From a more purist prospective, my question is not why not but WHY would you want to? Looks to me like if you wanted to ride on the road, you would buy something that you could legally ride on the road. In theory, this is like buying an R1 or Hyabusa and asking where can I buy knobbys and full fenders? I want to take that puppy offroad!?!?!?
Someone please help me understand

I don't think I would want a ATV for my main wheels on the street --- esp. if I had to go any distance on the highway. Even if they were legal I would not put on many highway miles BUT it would be ever so convenient to travel from one trail head to another, go up the road for anything if your car was unavaliabile, go down the road to haul a boat or log around a lot without hassles or having to trailer it. Where I live ATV's have to be licenced, registered and insured and new drivers (unlike car drivers) have to take a course.
Most agravating is abandoned rail lines that are used by ATV's. In some instances where these right of ways go through small towns the right of way has been designated as a walking trail only and hell would freeze over before you could take your four wheeler on the road. So the right of way, for ATV folks, turns into a dead end.
So why can't we use them on the road occasionally when it is convenient? I have driven motorcycles for forty years and I think they are safer than motorcycles or bicycles. I don't see what the big deal is.

lol...I knew it I would get at least one reply like this. I completely agree with your comparison (R1 with knobbys, on the trail) comment. But I didn't mean it like that.
I just think it would be cool if we were allowed to run to the corner store/down town if we're following the rules/speed limits. I would in no way/form want to take my quad down the highway, or go through heavy traffic unless someone released a street kit that somehow illiminated the tipsyness.
Plus, here in good ol' Port Huron, MI... we have what's called "Cruise Night". Cars, Trucks, Bikes, and I think it would be neat if we were allowed to throw a set of street tires on and cruise with everyone else.

OFF Topic debate (if you would like to haha)
I honestly don't even see why we can't in the first place as long as they met minimum width requirements, and speed laws.
The States allow these goof ***** that have never rode a street bike before (that can reach 120 mph+) to buy a bike...take an easy test, and drive off. I've heard of at least 3 people in my area dying in the past 5 years from hauling ***, and just loosing it. Why do they make bikes that go 120mph+ that start to wobble??? That's non-stable if you ask me, and a hell of alot more dangerous at those speeds.
Yes, Quads do handle differently, but make people take a class after they buy them...insure them, plate em', and call it a day. Just because there are some people in the world that couldn't handle it, doesn't mean other people in the world wouldn't be able or enjoy it. It's unfair if you ask me.
sorry for the rant
