I am working on a customers mojave and it has issues. When i choke the atv with my hand it will fire. It will run to about 2 secs. It's running but i have no throttle response. I can put it to the bar and it still sits there kinda running. It makes hte bup bup bup sound. Can any one help me is figuring this out. Like i said before it has no throttle when it starts. And it will only idle for about 2 - 5 sec.

try cleaning the gas tank valves sometimes those get blockd. try adjusting your idle maybe thats why it dies after a few seconds.

im starting to think its the timing. In my service manuel it says to put flywheel on the t mark in the window. and then line up the timing mark on the cams with the 43rd and 42nd pin on the chain. my problem is where do i start to count the pins?

Good day friend , first let me say that I just did a complete top end on my 89 mojave , I would first rebuild the carbarator it's real simple and inexpensive I think my carb kit cost about twenty bucks and you can find them on the internet all day long , ( I got mine from bikebandett.com), that's what it sounds like to me , that being said if it is a timing issue ( which your right this could make it run the way you discribe) then one has to ask ones self why did it jump time , if it did then that's bad it could get very complicated and expensive. a couple of reasons it could jump time 1) worn cam chain 2) broken cam chain tensioner 3) broken cam sproket pin, (the cam chain sprocket is bolted on and held in it's pespective timing spot by a small pin and nut 4) worn cam guides , as for your question as to timing, the timing marks on the cam sprockets should be the exaust ( front ) should be lined up with the plain of the top of the head and the intake sould be lined up with plain of the top of the head minus 3 degrees this is for cam chain take up from tensioner ,the mark on the exaust is where to start counting the pins. hope this helps you more than confuse you bro . I'll check this site from time to time to see if you need any more help.

The timing can be off becuase i had to installed a new valve spring retainer. Meaning i had to tkae the head off. Also the customer put all new gears in the bottom end. Theyhad to take apart the head also. I came to me with no compression, so i installed the retainer it definitly has compression now. So im thinking that i messed up on the timing puting it back together.

Also when they took it apart they marked the chain and gears with white out. This would be a big help for me accept when they put oil in machine it washed the whiteout right off the chain and gears.
