10-w40 oil, anything that is ment for motorcycls will work fine. dont use car motor oil, it will dammage your clutch system.

HI...
with that pipe coming out from under the seat, i would say its got some aftermarket stuff all ready
get your filters off ebay .. search kawasaki lakota oil
it takes 1.7L of oil, says right next to the filler hole, which is handy
filter is on the right front of the engine
look at right side, at the bottom right front corner you'll see what looks like a headsink with 2 bolts on it.. its enclosed .. remove cover, and it might still have a steel bar through the filter.. if so, keep it, if not, don't worry
its a wet clutch, and DO NOT use anything other than standard oil.. the same oil goes on your clutch as well as engine
don't open the oil filler when running... do a search on lakota oil to see why
looks like nice rear tires on it
you shift into reverse by going into neutral, pressing DOWN on the shift lever, and turning the **** right...
its easy to hit the run/kill switch
recoil starter is easy to use...
if it won't start, check the plugs first...
airbox is overly complicated
should have a 14T or 15 tooth front sprocket
crw = cycleworksracing.net
greg is doing a "335" kit for mine, which is a 10:compression big bore, .390 cam, and porting ... i call it a 340 kit, as the compression is much lower than his 335kit
stock displacement is 290cc
look under my "new lakota fan" thread
howdy!

on shifter..
its rev/neutral +5 up .. no "under" neutral 1st
to adjust clutch, you take of the NOT SQUARE cover on the right rear side of the engine/tranny ... 3 philips screws, loose the nut under there...iNSIDE the nut is a screw headed bolt, turn to the right until it tightens, turn to the left until you can feel it, and then*I* go back right 1/4 to 1/2 turn...
get a shop manual, really, best 25 buck spent on a quad

reread on how to adjust shifter, i had forgotten a thing, and added it back.
i prefer to use exxon oil, 10w30, and change it frequently.. no vodoo here, it is my opinion that fresh, proper level decent oil beats wrong level/badly used "perfect" oil.. but just my opinion.
there's no replacement for displacement, and the lakota is built to be trail and work, not race... its heavy for weight, in today's world, and, even though I am moding mine, the same dollars spent on a 350 will make that 350 that much better, to a point.
left brake handle is rear+parking brake, you can adjust it at the rear brake.
right is front brakes, and they hang like a snapping turtle
here's a great tips/mods on lakotas the rear brake thing is a MUST do!!!
i have basically done, or will do, all the mods in this thread, + adding displacemnt

i've dorked around with mine some, and I am going to put an IDS2 muffler and pipe on my blue bike and see how it like that... i have a feeling i am not going to care for it, if its loud.
i don't like loud, i like good..
I am on a quest to make a really good trail/fun to ride/CHEAP-and-reliable/hunting atv .. i am sure i could just go buy a new 400-500 and have all that, except the cheap part...
those tires on it will be great for a lakota .. looks like they will self clean quick.
Even CURERENtly stock (mostly) with 25" tires, my blue bike delivers enough torque to sink the rears in sand/mud/gravel/ruts ... in other words, the bike makes plenty of power in the stock format. its 100-200lbs heavier than "Race" quads (blasters and banshees) but will go through bad trails and has REVERSE and electric start... if the lakota had been kick start and no battery, it would be 100-140lbs lighter, and I would have over looked it for me.
think of it as a dodge truck -- looks great, hauls more than it should, plenty of power, good brakes, and handles well better than its class...its just not going to beat a vette.

airbox -- way too complicated, but it "only" takes off .5 MPH from my top end .. i am going to figure out a simpler arrangement, but not high on my list.
in a stock bike, regular works fine.. if you up the compression, you'll need better gas.
i am going to put my IDS on today, and we'll see how that works out
