This is crazy...Both of my Bayou's (identical) when started have an idle creep upward. If you give them gas the idle stays way up? I have used some carb cleaner on opne to see if it would work but no difference. I have also put some 93 octane in them to see if it was bad gas or a gumming problem and still running high? Whats up guys?

check if you have an air leak. if you have a little bit of pull id 1st gear at idol, that is ok.

take off the filter and turn the kill switch on. then place your hand tightly over the intake. hit the starter so the engine turns over a couple of times, this will create a vaccume in the intake. if you dont have a leak the vaccume will hold fairly steady for 30+ seconds, if ther is a leak the vaccume will only hold for a few seconds.

thats a good place to start. try this on both mechines

Ok I will do that...If the vacumn doesn't hold where would the leak be coming from? Whats strange is that it has happened to both of them at the same time??? Thank you for your time Cherokee!

if ther is a vaccome leak then start tightening all the clamps and bolts you can find around the intake. also try cleaning the carb out. at how much throttel is it reving up? could be the diaphram in the top of the carb if holding a vaccume for some reason to, that could keep your idol high as well

After further review it seems I may have a vacumn leak and I will test it further. When I started it this morning the idle wasn't as high but still noticable...I will do a carb clean thing today checking for loose clamps and leaks and get back to you! Thanks again Cherokee!

OK Cherokee...I did some digging today and one of the atv's seems to be fine. I sprayed some carb cleaner in the carb. it came down some but, still is idling high? I did check for any vacumn leaks and didn't find any. Everything is tight>>>

Now the other. The air cleaner has to be removed to start this one. You need to put your hand over the inlet to suck fuel into the carb. It starts then dies until it gets warmed up after a minute then continues running. I sprayed some carb cleaner in it and the idle climb to a high rate and won't come back down. If I shut it down it starts and runs at a screaming idle!

Are there rebuild kits for these little carbs and if so is it a job that I can do on my bench?

Do these carbs need to be completely sealed from inlet to filter?

Thanks Jamie

hm, thats an interesting question. there are rebuild kits, get a moose kit they are way cheeper than manufaacturers. is the slide moveing at all inthe carb when its idoling high? cuz if the slide is moveing that could be a problem.

Ouu! iv got an idea, if your bayous have had alot of houres on them its possible that the main jet is warn out and the hole is too big for the needle to fit into properly. then fuel is leeking into the body of the carb and being atomized. this would cause a high idol. solution is to replace the main jet.

a rebuild can be a work-bench project, i would try just changeing the main first. eliminate one thing at a time!

good luck

Alrighty then...I'll work on getting the kits and do one thing at a time. I appreciate it.

the carbs need to seal from the filter SIDE of the carb to the head. the rubber intake can be a problem part . how did the filter look, is there ANY chance of some of it making it back into the carb? If so, o a not running engine, inspect the carb for junk in the way.

do yourself a huge favor and buy the kawa or clymer manual for the bike before attempting the rebuld kit.

have you turned the idle way down and leaned up the mixture alot? have you sprayed carb cleaner right into the carb, while off, and let it sit a bit before starting?

could it be float level?

Say, do you know how to "Read" spark plugs, as I am wondering if you have any more fuel issues.. does teh bike backfire (too rich) stumble around until very warm (too rich) run good until good and warmed (after idle warm up) .. too lean...

hope any of this helps

Jeffe,
I am going to work on making sure everything is sealed from filter to carb. One seems good the other very poor...As I said earlier, to start the atv you need to put your hand over the air intake and it sucks gas into carb, Once its running it will warm up and it will run high idle on its own. While running I put the filter back on and close up the box. But everything is still loose inside. So that could be my first problem. if I close it all up before starting once cold it will not restart unless I go thru and put my hand over inlet again. Once warm it will start on its own put run high idle!

I have never touched either one of these carbs and have sprayed them with carb clean to see if it helps???
