On a 09 Brute 750 I have been told two different things about this system. Should it always be on or only when driven in low gear?

 

Engine braking has nothing to do with what gear (Lo or Hi) it is in. There is no gear position sensor on your BF. Egnine braking depends on vehicle speed only and it works only in certain speed range.

 

Mine seems to be on all the time. I can't left off the throttle and and just coast, it always brings the atv to a stop, regardless of speed. Normal?

 

I hope that it is normal or Im having problems also.

 

That is normal,atleast on my BF it is.

I have an 05' and mine has more engine brake going downhill in Lo range than in Hi. I have tried this on several different grades of hills in both ranges. Lo always brakes more, sometimes to the point where the rear wheels are trying to lock up.

 

That's because in LO gear the engine has to spin at higher RPM, not because engine brake actuator is exerting more force. Just like in cars or trucks, it would slow down quicker in log gears. The Kawi's engine brake actuator exerts the same braking force on the drive converter whether it is in LO or HI gear. The system doesn't know and doesn't care. The things you have to watch out are the two contacting parts on Kawi's EB system. And they are:
> Actuator system's teflon coated finger - think of this as a brake pad on your car. It wears out.
> Drive converter bearing plate - think of this as a rotor on your car. The plate itself doesn't wear out but the bearing could go bad either due to high heat and/or dust sucked into the CVT housing.

Now you know what to look for when you hear squealing noise and/or feel weaker than usual engine braking.
