Default 2003 Prairie 650 Not Starting??? Any Help appreciated.

Hi guys,

I have a question about my Prairie. I will give you the scenario that got me to where I am now. We went to Kermit which is about 9 hours from where I live. The Prairie ran great. It was rolled lightly on the second day out there. Flipped it over and it started and ran just fine. The last day there it just quit in the middle of a ride. It would turn over but not start. I pulled the hose off of the petcock that comes from the fuel pump. I turn the key and no gas. My brother who has the same bike, did it to his and it spit out gas. So, we trailered it home and the day after we got home I went to try and start it and it started up and ran fine. I didn't know what to think other than it was fixed. So, about a month goes by and me and my buddy decide to go ride in Crosby. I start it up ride it around its running fine and I put it on my truck. We get out there to Outlaws and it starts up so I let it run to warm up while I'm putting on my waders. It dies so I go over and try to start it again. Nothing. Same damn problem as when we were in Kermit. No gas coming from the pump. Any suggestions? I am stumped. Thanks in advance.

Locate the top portion of the fuel pump which you can see once you remove the seat. There are 4 wires coming out. This is what we will do:
> Remove ign key.
> Disconnect the fuel hose at the fuel petcock (that you did before).
> Get 2 test aligator clip wires
> Apply direct 12 VDC to the fuel pump, (+) to BRN and (-) to the Blk/Red wire.
> See if fuel is squirting out of the hose.

Let me know what you find.

I think I have same problem. I did do what you said and the pump started pumping fuel when I jumped it with 12 volt. I reconnected fuel plug and turn key to on position fuel was still pumping through. So I connected fuel hose back and started fine for a minute but died again. I removed the fuel hose and now no fuel is pumping again. Any idea??

Wow! It’s been a while. I ended up replacing the fuel pump. I can’t remember exactly which pump I used. It was not the Kawasaki pump because they wanted like 600 bucks for it. I looked up the fuel pressure rating of the stock pump and found a Mr. Gasket fuel pump at Oriellys for around 50 bucks that was just about the same. Mounted it myself and wired it to the stock wiring. It worked perfectly. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to so thank you with your help. I just ordered a new fuel pump and filter. I took a gamble since I got to wait on the order and hooked up a "tog switch straight from my battery to the brown + & the black with red stripe - wire on the fuel pump" . Now the pump has not stop working with this setup what ever I bypass has kept my 700 running great all day today. I just don't know if the relay is the trouble or something eles that I bypassed. You got me in the right spot that got me to keep it running just don't know where to go from here? Thanks again
