Prairie 650 issues
#1
Hey guys, i just bought a prairie 650 thats been rode hard and put up wet. I was hoping for some input on any or all of its problems to save myself headaches. Thanks in advance for any help
1) 4x4 wont disengage. I believe the 4x4 switch is the one near the throttle, no matter what position its in the four wheeler is always in four wheel drive
2) display doesnt work. Neutral and reverse lights work but thats it, nothing on the display works.
3) if you leave the battery hooked up it will drain. I believe this may be linked to the display. I assume a short somewhere.
4) belt is squeaking. Especially when sitting still. Squeaks and will slip when under a good load. I assume the belt needs replacing, havent had a chance to look. Is there an adjustment for it?
Im also needing some parts for it, the front rack is missing, does anyone make aftermarket ones? Id rather upgrade. Also, the right brake handle is broken.
Anyway, thanks for yalls help

First congrats on your acquisiotion of the P650. I have P700 in addition to two othe quads and the Prairie is my favorite.
But sorry to hear your problems and I would like to help you.
Any of following might be defective:
1. 2/4WD Actuator (servo motor)
2. Controller (sub black box)
3. Wire connection between Acutator and Controller.
4. Igniter (main black box)
It is the bad display meter. The lower (main part with pcb) part can be purchased instead of complete assembly (save little $$) but still pricey.
You may be right that display meter is bad/shorted and drawing current even when engine is not running. Disconnect the meter from main harness and see if the batter holds up the voltage or not.
Again you are on the right track. The CVT belt is either worn out and in need of a replacement or just needing a deflection adjustment. Yes, there are washers/shims in the driven converter that you can take out to make the belt tighter. Also, there is a belt deflection spec (23-28 mm with 13 lbs of force), and a special Kawi tool "go/no-go gauge" to measure the belt width and tells you whether good or bad.
I don't know if there is aftermarket racks are avail or not. The OEM rack is good enough in most cases. Mine is 2004 and still holding up. It sounds like previous owner of your quad well used (read "abused") it. Broken brake hand lever on utility quad?! - quite unusal in my book. You should check out this quad very throughly check. Hope you've got this quad at a very good price (read "dirt cheap").
You should get a factory service manual for proper diagnose and repair to get the job done right.
Not many folks here don't know how to ask right questions and they wonder why they are not getting right answers or none at all. You did very well, systematically asking questions with background first and no spelling/grammar errors that I noticed. You deserve the help you need.

Well i appreciate it. Ive had several four wheelers in the past and im reasonably mechanically inclined. Well, i took off the plastic and powerwashed her, looked for any frayed wires, loose connections, etc and found none. One thing i did notice is that when i have the key on there is a buzzing (sounded like a fuel pump at first) coming from the largest black box located under the seat, towards the rear of the bike. What is this and should it buzz?
And yeah, it was abused, but itll pull wheelies and i paid only $800 for it, not bad for a 4x4 that runs in my opinion.
And i appreciate your info....

Buzzing from the larger black box (igniter) is NOT normal. However, there are 2 other components that would make a buzzing sound on the quad when you turn on the ignition:
> Electric Fuel Pump priming sound.
> EBC acutuator - initialization sound.
But not from the igniter.
If your lower gear is not working, it probably means the Lower gear dogs are broken off by the previous owner (not coming to a full stop when shifting). Time to split the case and find out.

I have an 02 p650 that I got in about the same condition. If you haven't yet, look at nyroc's and Kiss of death's (kod) websites. KOD has great pictures on checking and adjusting belt. I just installed a new secondary spring and removed a shim on mine thanks to them. I'm interested in knowing if you decide to fix display and how much you have in it. And what it ends up taking for 4wd. I don't mind tackling any job, but I'm not a good electronics guy.

I also have a prairie 650 and I am having fuel issues, ( think it's carb rebuiling time) ,
But can you tell me if it is normal when you turn key on for fuel pump to come on for 5 seconds then shut off? ( is this the priming mode?) I would presume that when the bike starts the fuel pump start to flow gas.
Please help.
Thanks
