I own a '97 model (purchased new) and have been very pleased with it. It has never failed me while hunting, save only once when I sunk it four feet of water with a 100 pound pig strapped to the front rack. Later that day after several oil changes it still continues to run like new.

It tends to have a soft ride for those who like a more sporty ride but suits older (42) folks like me just fine.

My only regret is not spending the extra bucks for the Bayou 300 with more horsepower and dual-mode differential. But then, I've never had to leave anything (deer, hogs or gear) behind either.

You can spend a lot more and get a reliable ATV, but then why should you.

Extremely good quad. Has never broken down once and it is a 92. (always starts easily) It goes through extreme abuse, and it still runs like a champ. It is a very good quad to choose. It is very reliable. Even if you do have any problems, it is so basic that you can fix it yourself. "that's all I have to say about that"

I have a 1994 220. I love this machine, and cant see why your son wouldnt enjoy it. It can take a lot of beating and keep on ticking. I, however, recommend putting a new set of tires on, as the stock ones are pos'. Guessing that he'll be light, there will be a boat load of push steer, and removing the roundish stock tires (atleast in the front) will curb the machines tendacy to do this. Ours tops out at 45 or so - plenty fast enough, as I usually am able to keep it revving high in 3rd or low 4th to save gas.

As for gas milage, the 4 stroke uses like no gas, and I did about 50 miles and the tank was still half full. If you want more power or traction, a K&N is a good idea, as are mud tires.

You wont be disappointed. Even if your son doesnt shift it right everytime, the clutch and engine can take tons of abuse. I ride the thing hard as h*ll and grind all the gears. Will definately hold up to new learners forgetting to let off throttle when shifting ;-)
