95 Bayou 220 Hard to start

Default 95 Bayou 220 Hard to start

I have a 95 Bayou 220 that wont start with the elec. starter. It will start with the pull starter, but it cuts off when you give it a little gas.

I rebuilt the carburetor but have rode it since the rebuild and it did fine. The plug gets wet if I pump the throttle but not if I dont. Gas does run out of the drain tube if I open the screw. The idle screw position dosen't seem to make a difference. The plug is firing good.

I followed the clymer manual when rebuilding. The only thing I didnt feel comfortable about was the pilot jet. Is this easy to mess up the position on? I soaked the carb in a carb cleaner vat and it seemed to come real clean.

I believe that the problem is in the carb, but any suggestions will be appreciated.

BINGO, i agree with you, the pilot jet is what is still dirty, i've never had the position mess up on me, although i've messed with kawasakis before, the carbs seem universal to me.......anyway, pull the pilot jet back out, check for daylight on ports. blow'em, spray'em, blow'em out again, rod them out with either fine wire or an oxy/acetylene torch tip cleaner pack and check for daylight on every orifice/port the jet has got, get it clean, clean, clean. did i mention it needs to be cleaned!, seriously though, clean it and she should do fine.....

I pulled the carb off tonight. I pulled the pilot jet out and looked through the center and could not see through it. I cleaned it and reinstalled the carb. I got the bike started but after it warmed up for about a minute it shut back down. I played with the position of the pilot jet screw and cot it running a couple more times but it would die each time. Then I couldnt get it to start once it was warm.

I was thinking I need play with the pilot screw more. Does the idle screw also come into play when it is cold? I think I am on the right track, but not there yet. The pilot screw is not the easiest to get to to adjust so its not very precise adjustments I am making.

I was also wondering about the valve clearances. Could they contribute to this problem?

when i had my bayou, along the longitudinal axis of the jet there was 6-8 orifices positioned around the circumference of the jet itself. they were opposite of each other on each side,
similiar to this pic, see the orifices to the left? those have to be very, very clean, and like you said, also on the throat inside. on your needle, what groove is it set on(where your slide is located--little E clip above spring on slide).
i've never messed with the idle screw when it's cold, now the choke has a lot to do with idling when it's cold........your choke ain't stuck is it? cause after it's warm, a choke will bog it down and it'll die......or at least that's what my machines do.......

Check compression! You would be surpise how many times low compression can cause cranking problems, tight intake value is real common to be tight after an dirty or bad air filter.IMO.

Pulled the carb off again this morning. Pulled the pilot jet out again and found a piece of the wire I had used to clean it the first time stuck in it. Got it out, put it back together and SHAZAAM! It fired up. Its running good now. Thanks for all the help.

"Shazaam". i haven't heard that in years! wow, thanks for making my day. anyways, i'm glad you got it running, that's awesome, i'm sure your face was like when you saw the wire, and then your expression went when she fired up. anyway, that's great......happy trails.

It was. I still have to hold the throttle open just a tad to get it to start when its cold. Could this be fixed by adjusting the pilot screw out some? I set it at 1 1/2 turns out.

i'm not sure. i'm just a shadetree.....get it under a tree and i can tinker on it and probably get it going!...hmmmmm. i've never really thought about it. i usually give mine a little throttle when cold starting too. hmmmm....maybe one of the experts will chime in and give us some guidance......
