What's the mystery?

KD and KDX are NOT the same bike, only the engine cc is same and they are different in many ways.

KD - 16 hp, metal fuel tank, dual rear shocks, 5-spd trans, etc... typical 70's dirt bike.

KDX - 24 hp with piston reed valve, plastic fuel tank, mono rear shock, 6-spd trans, etc.... becoming more like early 80'sh dirt bike.

How one would scam you or steal your bike if you provide the last 6 digit of your VIN?
I think most people, if not ALL, here are trying to help you, not rob you.
Thanks Kayashi for your knowledge. For the most part I know the most of us are here to help others solve problems and answer questions for people in need. I try and always help others when I can but as you know there are a few bad apples in every basket. thats why I truly didn`t want to post the full vin number online.

I`ll get alhold of a dealer and post the results in a few days.

Since it was started in 1976, A=6. No chance of it being a zero. Then again, we are talking about a government mandated program.

But A=6.

Since I'm not familiar with these model bikes this is just pure speculation. Could it be someone changed plastic and possibly a few motor parts and made an actual kd look like a kdx?

Or did they do a transplant a kdx into a kd frame?

Looking at a parts fiche I`m convinced its an 81 or 82 and leaning towards the 82. I haven`t had a chance yet you talk to a dealer.
Wouldn`t the alphabet count to be similar to vehicles ? lets just say you had no idea when the first production year was, so when reading the vin number it would be impossible to figure out what year your vehicle actually is. Now if all manufactures followed the same system (witch I think they do) mine would be an 81

Did some further digging. The 17 vin system wasn't mandatory until and standardized until 1981. So A = 80.

Sorry for the confusion. I was born before all that.

So I would say you do have a 1980 KDX.

And don't forget about changing the rear suspension set up from the KD's dual shocks to KDX's mono-link swingarm!

I know. I was just pointing out to make the KD->KDX conversion job more complete!
