750 brute force with carbs

Default 750 brute force with carbs
it starts fine idles fine but when u give it more than just a little throttle it pops and backfires. it wont get over 8 mph and it smokes a little. just got with no history , need help please

Always start with basics first.
Do the compression check of cyls.
You want to make sure first the engine is mechanically in a sound condition before you do anything else.
