Default odometer flashing from 2 wheel to four wheel?

Hi! I have a Kawasaki 2004 kvf 4x4 700 prairie. My odometer flashes back and fourth from 4 wheel to 2 wheel drive when i'm riding it. I really don't think it comes out of gear, whether its in four wheel or two wheel, i'm just wondering if their is some type of a sensor that goes bad or if its something else. If anyone else has had this problem, could you please advise me. As always, Thank You for any advice...bob!

Yes, there are two sensors that could cause this problem. They are potentiometers, one in each Acutator; one for 4WD engagement in front gear box and the other for Engine Brake Control (EBC) Actuator.

The first thing is to find out out which mode it is. There are 3 modes:
Mode 1: This is the fastest flashing frequency, 0.5 sec interval for 4WD Actuator.
Mode 2: 1 sec interval for EBC Actuator.
Mode 3: 2 sec interval for both Actuator.

Once you figure out which failure mode your quad it is in, we will go from there.

Page 38 of manual.
Page 38 of manual says:

flashing 2wd/4wd indicator lights signal a malfunction of the kawasaki engine brake control system or the selectable 2wd/4wd system. A flashing interval of 0.5 seconds indicates a malfunction with the 2wd/4wd actuator, a 1 second interval indicates the KEBC actuator is malfunctioning, a 2 second interval indicates both actuators are malfunctioning.

Yep, 1-sec interval is EBC.
There is a couple way to confirm:

1. When you shut off the engine, do you hear any whining noise for a few second from the CVT cover side? If not, EBC is bad.

2. Apply direct battery voltage to red (+) and black (-) wire using aligator clip & paper clip to the EBC connector after disconnecting from the harness. If you hear the dc motor turning, that means EBC motor is good. But this does not mean whether the potentior meter is good or bad.

Hooked direct voltage to it & it turned. Then hooked it back up to ATV & went on working.Must have been stuck(?)

I guess so.
Now you know the dc motor is good. So, the next step is to disassemble it by removing 3 srews holding the outside Acutator halves of dc motor housing. You will see 3 or 4 small gears inside. Clean them out and apply some fresh grease.
