Price $32.99
HP2021 - Dayco High Performance ATV Belt. Fits Kawasaki 99-02 Prairie 400 | ATV Parts | MFG Supply
I like Dayco in my sleds but I never tried one in my ATV.

Thanks for the quick reply. mine measures 40.5" but is only 1.160 wide. I wonder if that little difference in width would cause performance problems

Is this you old belt 1.16" ? If so it could be from wear. 1.16 and 1.18 are so close I cant see it mattering . The length would be more important to me and they are the same.
I over used some belts on my sleds and thinned the width out more then 0.02" but the sled still rode ok.
Belt wear only effects the width not the length.
The length the main thing, it dictates the belt deflection and if to short even by a small amount the machine will move even at idle while in gear.
Width is much more forgiving.

yeah that is the belt on it now . The machine doesnt pull out very well. seems sluggish .on steep bank it wont pull out from a stop. the clutch appears to work right. i mean it has good range of motion . but there is a lot of slack in the belt. thats why i was asking about the circumference.

Circumference is the length. Change the belt. The increase width will make a difference.
I changed the belt on my 500 Sportsman after 2000 miles yet the old belt looked ok to me.
After changing the belt the ATV took off quicker and would almost hit 60mph while with the old belt it maxed at 55.
The only difference I spotted was the old belt was thinner by less then the thickness of a dime, but I could sure feel the difference in performance.
get your 1.18" width back with a new belt maybe all you need.

Question

Did the 97-98 models have a different belt? Sometime close to 99 I got a recall notice to replace my original belt and I've never had it looked at since they replaced it then. I've never noticed any change with around 2000 miles. I'm also not quite sure how to get to the belt.

Ok so I went to the local shop today to get a new belt he had a kawasaki belt there that fit the 97-98 models it was definitely longer than 99-02 belt. I bought a Dayco HP2021 for mine It was wider than my old belt . I still have a lot of deflection and it still wont perform like it needs to.Anyone know how to get that driven clutch off without the "special tool" from Kawasaki.

Sounds like your deflection is off . With the new belt you added back the width but with it longer you didnt gain nothing due to the deflection out of wack.
You want the belt to sit as high in the seconadry..driven as it can be without engaging the system.
Think if it this way ... when the belt sits down in the sheaves its like starting in a higher gear ..smaller rear sprocket. belt sitting up higher gives you a bigger sprocket so to speak .. inturn lower gearing easier take off .
Get the deflection set and you should see the difference. Ive tweaked with sled clutching over the yrs and theres alot of tweaks that make up the "right set up" for you. From rider wt to rpm's all plays a role in the performance of the cvt system and its set up.

On a sleds belt deflection it will normally run with the top of the belt about a 3/16" up out of the sheaves... about where the cord is on the side
Also side force in the secondary has to be strong enough to not let the belt slip in before it grabs ... might be time for a new spring in the secondary.

Thanks for the info need2ride thats good stuff . is the deflection set by those spacers on the back side of the clutch or could that spring be part of the problem. My belt sits about 1/16" above the sheave. but there is so much deflection probably 2 1/2 inches deflection in the belt.
