Default Bayou stuck in reverse

My 89 bayou 300 is stuck in reverse. Moving the gear selector feels like it changing gears but it won't come out of reverse. I can start it with the pull cord but not the starter. Any suggestions?

Faulty linkage/cable adjustment, failed cable? Best to discuss one problem at a time.

Stuck in reverse is the problem. Starter won't engage unless it's in neutral. But can't get out of reverse.

Was working fine. Shifted to reverse and then it wouldn't shift back out of reverse

With engine off, try rocking the bike forward and backwards and see if it will come out of reverse... What have you tried thus far?
