Just picked up my new 650 a couple of days ago and have only rode around the yard a few times. I also have a sportsman 500 and the difference in power and handling is unbelievable. I have however noticed a couple of things that have me concerned. First, I have noticed the tranny on the new Kaw seems to whine louder than the Polaris. The whine is loud enough at mid/high rpm that I can barely hear the engine in both high and low range. The tranny cover also gets pretty hot after a few laps. Also, the rear differential seems to have alot of play in it as the tires move an inch or so before the gears catch which causes a noticable clunk when hitting the throttle after coasting. I was hoping that someone with a little more experience on this ATV could tell me if this is this normal or should it go back to the dealer.

Mine whines quite a bit more than my polaris did also, but I'm already used to it. I notice the same clunking noise in the rear end when I apply the rear brake. I don't know if it is normal or not. Maybe the clunk is assoiciated with the rear brake plates, and not the gears? The handling and the power are unbelieveable.

My 650 also whines, but I have not noticed a clunk in the rear.

I don't believe the bike has a differential, should be just a ring and pinion to make the 90 degree turn. Any noise at all in this area is trouble - have the dealer look at it right away.

As for the tranny whine, I also had big time whine when I first got the bike (less than 2 miles on the odo). It was very annoying, but went away within 50 miles. Now got 250 or so on it and now whine at all. Actually quiter than my Rubicon.

I do have a new problem. When in low range and coasting to a stop, the compression braking chatters lots. I had the same experience with test bike and the dealer told me later it was a simple adjustment. I've got another post in this forum, but no meaningful info on the chatter problem yet.

Interested to hear from others on the chatter issue. BTW, this bike is amazing!!!!!!!!!!

Hey "DEMPS" just got my 650 back today from the dealer about the chatter noise when in low range. When I would go and then let off the gas it chatters really bad well the tech told me he was stumped and had to call Kawasaki to see what was wrong with it turned out to be out of adjustment he said. So he adjusted it and I have rode it all day today and it dosent make and chatter noise now. So I would bet your's is out of adjustment also.

zsilverado,
Mine still chatters bad when I press and release the throttle in low range. At the dealer what exactly was adjusted, how, and to what specs. I need to tell them exactly what to do so it gets done right.
Thanks.

JEFFOXSR" Not sure on what they adjusted but i know the tech was not sure on what to do and had to contact kawasaki to fugure out what the problem was. And he told me it tured out to be out of adjustment I will ask the tech when I go to pick my four wheeler up again from the shop. It stays more time getting fixed than it does out on the trail. mine is working great now in low range so he did fix it right.
