Came back from rideing yesterday pulled the 650 prairie off the trailer and statrted to wash it while i was washing it i noticed the rear boot clamps were lose at the back of the motor to the rear swingarm and the boot was all in a bunched up so it had to come off while riding. There is all kinds of sand and water in there should I take it back to the dealer and let them check it out and put the boot back on? Or do yall think it will be ok if i put the boot back on my self not sure whats in there a ujoint? think with all the sand in there and water and damage was done.???

i don't know for sure but it most like has a CV joint in there, kinda like what is on the drive axle of a front wheel drive car. If the boot came off while you were rideing that would mean that the grease in there is most likely contaminated with dirt and grit. which will lead to premature joint failure. this is what happens to the joints on the cars, the boot breaks and allows dirt into the grease and the joint eventually breaks. I would look at like this, yes there is probably dirt in the grease but is it enough to hurt the joint during the lifetime of the quad that you own it????? You may be able to take it apart and clean the grease out of the joint and repack the same way that you would a bearing, or you can make the dealer do it

You definitely want to clean out the dirt and water before repacking with grease. After all, why would the boot be there if it wasn't to protect the CV-joint. Because the boot is still in good shape, it may be just a simple matter of removing the clamp at the other end and sliding the boot back onto the drive-shaft to gain access to the CV joint.

Being that this is a 650, my guess is the unit is still under warranty anyway.

Actually, I'm 99% sure that there is a u-joint back there. So clean out the dust and dirt in there and you should be o.k. Check out buykawaaki.com and look at the microfiche there.

rinse the boot out and put it back on with a stainless steel tie strap or take it back and make the dealer do it
