I need a little more info!

What did you clean it with last time?
I've seen poeple clean them with solvents and gasoline before and the results were melt downs or just braek in pieces, Then get all stuck up in the carb.
Is the rubber area melted or any of the air box?

This is wierd, a mojave is liquid cooled and shouldn't get to hot.
Take a better look and see if it was heat induced or chemicly.

As far as a replacement K&N or unifilter, Just as well make it a after market. The stalk one probably cost the same if you have to go to the dealer.

I vaguely remember this happening to me years ago. Riding along on my '88 mojave and heard a loud pop or a backfire. Opened up the air filter panel later and the filter was torched. Can't remember the details of why it popped but might help understand how this could happen.
