Yesterday I left home and it was fine, about a mile later I pulled into a field and heard a noise. I hope not but it sounds to me like a bearing somewhere in the motor, probably in the bottom. Thought maybe someone would have an idea, maybe something with the starter or generator, I can feel it in the footpegs. This is a 2001 Lakota and I have not beat it. I have ridden a little and it seems to have gotten worse fast. I changed the oil, no shavings anywhere.Any ideas?[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif[/img]

 

Before you check the engine. Make sure that your engine mounts are all tight and be sure that your frame isn't broken anywhere. When this happens, it sends the vibration into the engine making it sound just as you describe.

If all chacks good, take it to your dealer or other trustworthy shop and let them listen to it.

I do wish that was it. It is something with the motor, i`m afraid. Iwas hoping someone might say there could be something with the starter. It really sounds to me like a rod bearing. I don`t really know where to go from here. I thought these things were pretty reliable but if there was a bad one I would find it.

 

My lakota do the same thing and i took it to the shop. And they said that the timiming chain needed to be adjusted so they adjusted it and it's fine now.

If there is no sparkles, shavings, or other metal in the oil, or filter element there just really isn't anything to get wadded up over. It's pretty near impossible for an engine to have internal trouble without it showing in the oil. ( for example when driving a company vehicle, I call in and tell them it blew a head gasket( water in the oil). They say "Nawh! can't be, top the oil and water and hammer down!" Next week the engine blows, "Nawh can't be! are you sure there was oil and water in it?" "Yes, there was it's strung out over a quarter mile down the highway now"....when the pan plug was pulled they had to poke a screw driver through the metal in the bottom of the pan to get anything to come out, that was from a week of driving with water in the oil)

The moral of the story watch the oil, it tells all.

 

Well it turned out to be a bearing on the crank. Got it fixed and when I pick it up I`ll also be bringing home a Yamaha Wolverine set up for pushing snow this winter and playing with next summer. I still like the Lakota but needed something I could work more with and still play. The Lakota will staying with us tho.
