Gaff, Thanks dude! I think I am all over my problem. My level is just too high. I'll lower the floats more and that should take care of it. My level is still slightly higher than what you are telling me your is. This is a good thing. Thanks alot for checking for me. I'm out! See if I can take care of this today.

Stebob,
How did it work out. I'll pull the carb and measure the float if you need!
The track was a rain out today, I wanted to get a practice in before the race tomorrow.
I'm going to get up early tomorrow and see if I can get a couple laps in before the races!!!
I installed the new FMF on the boys bike this week, sounds sweet. It came with no jetting instructions but I bumped the main one, but we found the main needs to go down and the pilot needs to go up, well don't have any of these iddy biddy jets so I had to order them from honda, yup they took me

Well Gaff here's what's up. I lowered the floats and now I'm 1/4" just about on the nose from the mating surface. I let it run for awhile, shut it off and messed around with other stuff for while. Came back about 10 min later to run it for awhile again and mess with the idle mixture screw. Went ahead and went back to 2 1/2 turns. Went to change the oil, get the pan under it, all so far so good. Got the oil draining and the fuel starts to drip out. Not fast but constant, few seconds between drips. I figure I'll lower them a little more. Since you said your is a little over 1/4" I figure mine may still be high. I also recall putting my needle on the 3rd notch. I put a new spark plug in it today too. I'll get a plug reading soon to see if I'm running rich or lean or what.
Went ahead and rode it for a little bit. Noticed the mid range pulled real well but off idle stumbled and little then picked up. Off the line is weak. I also have some deceleration backfire. I figure I'll go out 3-3/2 turns and see if it's better. I got tired of working on it and came home. I put 8 1/2 hours in it. Do you feel that I can get my off idle response back with more adjustment of the idle mixture screw?
While at was at it today I addressed another problem that has been bugging me. I have a little play in an upwards and down motion in my handle bars. The entire steering shaft moves. I pulled the head off and cleaned and greased the seals and stuff real good. I also pulled the lower bearing out and found the play in there. I cleaned it real good and packed it up with grease. Play is still there but the motion is real smooth. I going to get another lower bearing assembly. It drives me nuts.
I also put the Moose handguards on today. Don't think I care for them. They hit my leg when turning sharp. They interfere with my hands some too. I'll prob. get some Acerbis or something.

gaff- when i had my lakota i ordered a cam from web. when my shop went to put it in something was different. we sent my cam to web and they reworked it. this was around may or june of 2000. it should have been more aggressive than they made it. You should check with them to see. Web cams can probably pull the ticket. The name of the shop was DRD machine in weatherford tx. If web can find that ordered have them be alittle more agressive than that. I was slightly weaker on the bottom but 100 percent better mid and top. the biggest drawback is the auto clutch.
banshee boy put the spanking on me today. i used to be 50 feet ahead at 800 feet, now i am 15 feet behind.

stebob,
I feel the float needle may be a little worn and the cold air is making the little rubber tip hard wich just doesn't seal good. I have had this problem over christmas with our hondas, once it warmed up they stopped.
The float level isn't an exact science usually if your close you have it, But like I said if the rubber tip is a little worn it gets hard in the cold and doesn't seal as well.
As for the hand gaurds, we just had no luck with any kind, we remove the stock ones off are XR's and tried a couple different kinds and still nobody liked them.
I had my air/fuel mixture screw out to 3 1/4 turns at one time and it did take care of some decell back firing, but I sealed my exhaust better and got the bottom end to work better, I returned my air/fuel mixture screw back to 2 1/2 turns and it works much better, Although I ordered a couple pilot jets and wish to get back to lower end tuning.
I have the 13T sprocket and can realy tell if my jettings off, but so far every thing seems to be good, but I got some pilots to mess around with it. When I was messing with the air/fuel mixture screw there was a graet deal of difference on were I had it, the leaner it was the better it was off the bottom, I will let you know what I find, I'm going down one pilot size and try to go from thier.
It all feels good but I think you and I feel a bad transition point between bottom and midrange.
14mins,
I ment to do a search and see how you liked that cam, but web cam doesn't make me feel to good per our conversations on the phone.
I'm going to get a hold of micky see what he thinks and talk to web some more.
Thanks for the private message on that idiot!!!!!!
stebob,
the FMF on the boys bike worked out well. They don't offer a jet kit for the 80, so I ordered a complete set of pilots and mains for it. The pipe gave a good bit of power but deffinately needs jetted.

Hey Guys,
Sounds like everyone is having a good times with their quads. I toke some vacation around New Years and went to the beach with a group of friends (the beaches here in Costa Rica are beautiful). I toke the Lakota and there were a few other quad owners in the group with theirs as well. It was great!! We rode about 50 miles up the beach on dirt roads and trails and toke some time to admire the scenery. There was a Blaster, Mojave and a Raptor (he left early though, emergeny at his work). The lakota did pretty good against the Mojave and Blaster (although those little Blasters really move!). The Raptor is highly modified and killed us all. I have not done anymore mods to the Lakota and I am not planning on doing anymore right now. I really like the set-up now, but wish I had more power. I am saving up for the new Suzuki next year (Z400). I have been reading all the posts and keeping up with the topics. Gaff, it seems that you have a lot of plans for your Lakota (It should really move with the mods you are thinking of) I wish the Lakota was lighter, that is it's main problem as a sport model, it is too heavy. I am waiting for the weight loss article here in ATV connection. Well, take it easy.

300cr,
It's graet to see your still out thier.
I must agree about the power of the lakota, It needs more.
In the lakotas defense I can report that I have raced in mx and xc, or cross country if you will, and it does graet.
I don't believe any body knows the power drop from the bikes to the quads like me.
After many years oy riding huskies, I bought a CR-250, all had awsome scarey power, this even the biggest quads don't have.
The lakota is not only my first quad but my first four stroke.
Well my report is this, It's all up to the rider, thier has been quads I would not like to mention that every one here says kills the lakota but I have managed to take them, thier is quads that are said to be the best quads for mx, but the riders were mis informed that they needed to know how to ride them. there are just so many things I could tell you all about the lakota that would make you all call me a lier, but untill sunday rolls around, you will never know.
I found cross country wise, wich is my true passion, that the lakota does real well, thiers not to many I've run with that can tell you any less!
But the biggest thing is you must find the quad that fits you, still not saying the lakota is the best of any thing, just saying I've been having a ton of fun proving just about any body wrong with it.
Tell you the truth 300cr I've been leaning towards the suzuki or the cannondale, but let them run for a year and see if Kawi has any thing for me!!!!!

Gaff,
When did you say you were going to Tennessee?
I think I'm gonna replace the needle valve and see what happens.
To go richer or leaner by raising or lowering the needle, which way is which, I forget? I believe I'm on the 3rd notch, if lean, which way? It's rideable now but the offline response bugs me. Do you have a 2nd e clip on the top notch and spacers in between? Do have anything above the top notch on the needle as far as loose spacers or something?
300cr,
Sounds like a good time! Glad to hear that Lakota faired well. I've always wondered how it would do against a Mojave. Did he pull you good on the drags?
Good to see your still around. I too am waiting for them to finish the weight loss article too. WHAT'S UP GUYS?

Gaff,
New to this forum, but have made some improvements to my Lakota thanks to these discussions. I changed my sproket this weekend and it definitely helps with low end. How hard is it to change the pipe and jeting? I can handle the pipe, but I am concerned about screwing up the carb. Is there a way to reduce the weight of the Lakota? Do you have any other improvements you would recommend?

Stebob,
I believe it is in april that the gncc race is going to be there. I'll look up the dates and post it!
After our conversation on the phone last night and some comparissons on how our quads ran, I was kind of puzzled, but I remembered something that may be the difference.
On the lakota as well as all quads equipped with a CV carb, all your performance directly depends on how fast we can get the slide open in the carb. The quicker it opens the quicker throttle response, the quicker it will accellerate.
One thing I did and forgot was I removed the snorkle cap from the air intake and also drilled a few holes in my air box. I know now I have no air restrictions.
The only way the slide will open quicker is to move more air through it. I also know another way to get performance out of it, and that requires some modding to the slide spring, but let me get further a long and I'll get it to work good and then I'll post how it works out!!
As stebob and I discussed last night is all you poeple up north should just live with your set ups at this point, with the bitter cold you all are going through this time of year, I just don't think you can fine tune rite now, and if you do the weather will change tommorrow. I have the luxury of living down here and the weather is still warm, so I'll try to do the leg work for you. I'm going to put a little fact sheet together about what I did and my findings on the lakota, if any ones interested send me your email address and I'll send you a copy.
wheelin,
Welcome to the board.
We are all waiting for wieght loss Ideas! As far as the jetting, it's quite easy, get the jet kit, with a IDS2 and it will change the quads total feeling. When you do get the jet kit, the instructions are very good, but no matter what it says stick the #130 main in, we have been round and round on this one and, we feel the #130 is best.
A few things you could do while waiting to mod, under the front hood you will find a rubber cap that goes over the air intake, just remove this. Then pull the slide out of the top of your carb and look under it you will find two holes one the needle goes through and another off center hole, well that one is the slide lift hole, take a 3/32 drill bit and drill out the lift hole, this will give you a bit more throttle response and the air box will let you get another 100 rpm's or so.
The filter, pipe and jet kit combo realy works good
I road in some water, actualy alot of water this week, and just wanted to let you all know that the air box drains leak and you may need to through some duct tape on them before you go.
I spoke with mickey yesterday, well I had to pay him he will be sending out the 322 kit wednesday, I'm going to go with a cam and some porting, as stebob and I spoke last night I'm just going to open the intake and exhaust ports and do a lot of polishing, any one have any thing they could add as far as head work goes?
I also spoke to mickey just a bit about the cam, and he seems to have that worked out, so I probably will get that from him as well.
Every one seems to offer heavier clutch springs, and barnett offers them with thier clutch kits, Does any one know if thier is any differences!!
Well I have more I wanted to talk about but as usuale my post is getting long!!!!!
