I have a neighbor girl that has a 2001 mojave. She has worn out 2 sets of rear tires and the fronts are bald too.She rides the thing every day.I noticed that the oil was real dirty so I asked her and her dad how often they change the oil/filter.She said that she thought they had changed the oil once since they bought the bike brand new!Her dad gave a blank stare and said"it has an oil filter"?YIKES!

So a couple of us are gonna do some maintenance on the poor thing.I'm gonna adjust the valves, change the oil/filter/throw a plug in it and clean the airfilter.

Is there anything else I should do to it? Anything I don't know about?
thx

Check all the cables for the right amount of free play. Check the drive chain too. You might want to check the mixture screw to because sometimes they come out a little. It should be 1.75 turns stock. I know there just little things but they shouldn't be forgotten. Besides that you have evrything covered.

Thanks! I forgot about adjusting the clutch.I can't believe how tough that mojave engine is.Imagine what would happen to a car if you wore out 2 sets of tires and never changed the oil.I hope it's not too late.Amazingly,It doesn't smoke or use oil.

It lives! The poor thing finally quit on her.So we pulled the oil plug and let it drain while we took off the plastic. The 2 valves that are on the right side of the head if your sitting on the bike were so tight I couldn't get a .006 feeler guage in there.I adjusted the valves to .010.I think this is why it quit running, the valves were always open. Then I poured a qt of oil down the engine with the valve cover off to kinda flush it out.The oil was soooooo dirty.

The airfilter had 1/4 inch of dirt on it!

We put it back together and put 2 qts of cheap oil in it and a new spark plug.

We told her to ride it about 15 minutes. Then we changed the oil and filter.I donated some "spectro motorcycle oil...20-50" that I had laying around.

It's like a new bike again. I think I'll change the oil again in a week or so and try to get it on a schedule.

I can just imagine how much better it runs. It doesn't take much to notice a big difference. Are you going to conyinue doing the maintence for her or did you show her and her dad what needs to be done on a regular basis?

Her dad is kinda a couch potato,he can't seen to get motivated enough to work on the thing. Her little brother is pretty smart.(11yrs old)He got all the plastic off by himself and put it back on.He watched me and I explained what I was doing. When we change the oil again I'll let him do it,I think he can handle that ok.He also cleaned the air filter,re oiled it and put sealing grease on it where it goes against the air box,w/o my help.I think I can leave the oil and filter stuff to him.I'll keep doing the valves untill he gets a little older.

I'll just get a couple of extra oil filters next time I go to the bike shop and some extra oil.I thought about regular car oil, does the clutch work ok with it or should I continue with oil that is formulated for wet clutches?I guess I'll just donate the stuff as they need it.Or when I think it needs it.
