WHAT IS A SPROCKET?
#1
I keep hearing of people putting different sprockets on their sport machine, what is a sprocket and what will it do if you get a different one put on. Will it increase performance or power, does it go to the chain? As you can tell I'm not very machanically sound with atvs. That is why I need All the info I can on the sprocket. If I was going to put a different one on a Lakota Sport, which should I put on?THANKS

The srockets are what your chain is on. By changing sprockets you can in crease speed but hurt your low end power on take off. If you do a lot of low speed trail riding and stuff you need mor ow end power and not as much speed. this all can be controled by the size and ratio of your srockets.

For instance...
I had a 15 tooth sprocket on my Honda CBR600F3 street bike. I put a 14 tooth sprocket on it and got more low end power and acceleration, but sacraficed some top end performance too do so. Luckily the top end that I sacraficed was noticable somewhere around 145 mph. So as you can see really made no difference to me.
Less teeth means gain in low end torque, w/ sacraficing overall top end speed.
For hole shots and increased low gear acceleration
More teeth means gain in top end speed, w/ sacraficing overall low end torque.
For increased top speed and gas mileage
Hope this helps.
