The reverse **** turns easy, and stays easy if maintained properly. I'm pretty sure the Lakota is like the Mojave and the reverse **** operates a cable to release the "safety" so you can use reverse. That way there isn't any that accidental shifts that tear out your tranny. A riding buddy of mine had an '88 Mojave that was beat to death and he had the occasional gear grinding down shift into reverse. I think his quad logged about as many miles rolling over as it did on it's wheels. I'm sure that had a little something to do with it.
I think that is still how it works anyhow, I haven't had any trouble with it, so I haven't messed with it much. There are some guys with some pretty trick Lakotas on this site that would probably know for sure.

The **** does turn very easy. Reverse is very easy to use. I have never hit reverse on accident. The **** is a saftey so unless something is wrong it will not go into reverse w/o turning the ****. The cable will stretch after awhile. There should be 2-3mm play between turning the **** and cable movement. There is an easy adjustment on the cable where it attaches to the engine case. I recommend getting a Clymer's manual. It'll make your life a little easier. All 5 gears are up.
