powering up a 300 4x4 praire

i have a 99 300 4x4 praire with 26 vampires all around. i would like to know if anyone knows of any bolt on mods i can do to increse the low end power of the bike

Low end?

More displacement's the best recipe for increasing low-end grunt; factory overbore delivers little increase.

Unless you're prepared to spring for a FST 400+ cc bore & stroke job, I dunno--buying a Prairie 400 is probably more cost-effective. Meanwhile, you can use low range if you need more torque for turning tires.

Mid to top end? www.webcaminc.com; grind 40a for the KLF300 oughta fit; ask 'em.

what about a pipe? i have heard that a jet kit and pipe will make a big difference? your thoughts please

While you seek low-end performance gains, aftermarket exhausts, like camshafts, shine at the TOP end; from Gordon Banks experience, sometimes producing less off-idle power than a stock component (Gordon's famous, "tie it to a tree and see if all four wheels spin" experiment).

"Jet kit?" Properly jetted, your carb provides a mixture insuring the right burn at full throttle; if your plug's the right color after a wide-open run, you can assume it's pretty close throughout the range where the needle is withdrawn from the main jet. Again, no marked increase in LOW END performance.

With a few assorted main jets and only cam/pipe/air filter mods, I think you hold the key to optimum jetting by plug reading. The ATV Connection Tech Tip article on Kawasaki Keihin CV32 carburetor (like the one on your Prairie) maintenance, and the references on carb tuning at the end of the article, might interest you.

Summarizing, increased power comes from processing more fuel per unit time. Most hop-up gains involve processing more fuel at higher rpm's; cam timing, carburetion, and exhaust modifications typically target the high end. More low-end power can be achieved by increasing engine displacement. You can save time, effort, and maybe even money by trading in your 300 cc Prairie on a 400 cc model, if low end power is your goal.

Think about it. Pick a point at the low end, say, 2500 rpm. Your Prairie produces, say, 10 hp at the rear wheels at that speed. But you want it to produce 15 hp there! How can more combustible mixture be forced into the cylinder at that rpm to produce 50% more horsepower? Cam timing? Mixture enhancement? Low back-pressure exhaust? Not likely. These improvements take fuller effect at higher rpm's. Increasing the displacement, however, enables processing of more fuel and production of more power at that rpm; otherwise, she's gotta wind, make more rpm, to process the fuel needed for the power increase.

I have to agree with Tree Farmer on this one. The 300 motor isn't built for what you are trying to accomplish. You could probably ad mods to let the engine breath better and get a little more top end out of it, but I wouldn't expect anything more. Upgrading to a 400 Prarie is probably the best solution, however, you will take a beating if you trade your 300 in. I have a 300 4x4 and, for a 300cc motor, it's fantastic. I don't plan on putting bigger tires on it, maybe just more aggressive tred design, but, again for a 300cc motor, it beats just about any ute in its class. I ride with a few people who have Honda 300 fourtrax's, Kodiak and Suzi's, and the Kodiak is the only one I have trouble keeping up with. I blow right by the other ones.

Unfortunatly I think it's a shoulda, coulda, woulda situation. I bought a 99 Prairie 400 in Oct. The dealer tried to push the 300 on me, but considering the weight of both machines being almost equal, I hadta go for the bigger motor. Just enjoy what ya got. Remember, Some people still WALK through the mud.

thanks everyone for your input. i am happy with my machine. i have walked through mud where the honda 300's were stuck. i have pulled alot of bikes out of holes that i walk through. i am waiting on the honda rubicon to come out. i might give my kawasaki to my wife and get the rubicon if the test rides are good.
