changing the drive belt
#1
i am changing the drive belt on my 2000 prairie 400 4x4. I have taken the belt cover off and removed the old belt and installed the new belt. Is this all that I need to do other than put it back together???
All help is greatly appreciated
Thanks

If you took the driven pulley off, you should have cleaned and regreased it. I don't have a book for the 400 so I don't think you really have to do this if you did not take it off. There is other stuff in my 650 manual to check on the drive pulley, but I do not believe you have to check these things unless you are experiencing problems other than a worn out belt.
Just check to make sure the belt deflection is right and you are good to go. for the 650, push it down with 13lb force, and it should only sag .87 to 1.06 inches. If it sags too much, you remove shim thickness from the shims inside the driven pulley.
My brother's 400 has signs of a loose belt. I will have to do this on his quad soon.

no, i didn't remove any of the pulleys, just pulled the belt off and slipped the new one on there. now i am going to figure out how to snorkel the belt housing, it was full of dirt and the rear snorkel was totally clogged with dried mud

Ya know, I wish these quads were made in a way that you could easily slip on some kind of snorkel tubes in case you see a real deep stream. You would just get some the tubes out and clamp them on, then when you are past the stream you just take them off again.
