I am sure that this has been discussed here before, but I can't find the postings. My 650 has 85 miles on it.
I started it yesterday, and while still cold and sitting there idling in neutral, this "rattling" noise began in the clutch cover area. You rev it up a little, it goes away, for a little bit, only to start again after the engine idles down. After it warmed up, it went away. It did it in R and H, as well as N shifter positions. Is the noise the sound of those "wear-buttons" ? This is the first weird noise I have heard out of this bike. I HOPE this is a fairly normal noise.....What do you all say?

trx450, sounds like the wear shoes. Mine does it too but it didn't start making the noise till I had 700 km on it. I have so many different noises coming from my clutch that I just started to ignore them and drive it like I stole it. The clutch and belt on the 650 is the only thing that worries me. I already had it shimmed and had the cover off several times checking different noises.

Hello Everyone,

I was going to buy either a 2002 or 2003 Kawasaki Prairie 650 V-Twin, but the belt drive system is worrying me a little bit. All my machines previously had a clutch and gears. I'm hearing quite a bit of problems from your postings here on atvconnection with belt deflection, shimming, belts wearing, etc..etc. But I'm not sure.

I may wait and see the new Honda Rincon with the 'car like' automatic transmission. But who knows, I'm sure they will have their own problems too.

I'm just going to wait and see.

Thanks,

IronBear

If it goes away when warmed up then dont worry about it. If it persists after warmed and driven for about ten minutes then yes you have to replace the wear shoes. They are very simple to replace and don't cost hardly anything. The only problem you will run into is choosing the correct replacement size as there is about 10 - 15 different thicknesses to choose from.
