Hi All,
Something that has probally been covered already - but:
Is there a performance difference in the Praries as they come off the show room floor? I don't mean the little difference that are within any machine made, I'm talking about "noticable" differences. I hear talk (but have never seen) of guys getting their front wheels up by just using the throttle from a dead stop, even with over size tires. Mine wouldn't do it stock and it doesn't do it now. I've tried it on dry pavement and in the dirt. I can tell that's it's really close and the front end gets light but it doesn't actually lift off the ground. (Belt and all in good shape)
Granted any little bump when you hit the throttle and the front end does lift off. I love my Prarie but I would hate to think I've ended up with one of the slower ones and if I have, I wonder what I have to do to fix it?
Any imput would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think the 650's really have that much variation in any parts, at least not that would cause two quads to act much different in the same stretch of race track.

I think the main differences between people's power are due to two principal facts:

1. Some of us use a stickier filter spray, and/or use more of it, and/or don't get it all out when cleaning.

2. For some reason, the jetting is kinda on verge for some people and not others. Depends on the air filter, and elevation.

Mine would never pull wheelies stock in high. Now I get em easy, in high, even with 28" heavy tires. It only has that much umph when it is warmed up. Not good to rag on it cold anyway.

Some of us already have heavy tires and maybe forgot what the quad was like before the tires.

So nyroc whats the verdict on the air filter and jets? Worth the trouble or not really?

The jet kit made the quad run better than new, more per down low. Much greater fun factor. I have my brother sold on Dynojet, and he only has a 400 (needs every little bit worse than me). The K&N helps it breath. K&N is awseome for quads.

I like my K&N on my truck, ont the 660, on the 400. But I hate it on the 650, just because of the way it seals, I don't feel it seals out dirt positively for the few inches that the lid does not make contact with it very well. I use grease around it, and no dirt gets past it, but it is messy. I like the K&N filter material best, but I don't like the way it fits the 650 airbox.

Thanks for the response guys - I'll be waiting for the new "black box" everyone is talking about. If it unleashes the power everyone thinks it will - it will be well worth the investment!

Happy Riding!

i lso am not happy with seal w/ the k&n filter.. i must have sat there an hour saying its gotta fit a difft way. last time i went riding thru mud and water. i did noticea lil dryed up water in the box w/ some mud. bottom line is the quad is an animal w lots of potential.

I gues I wish I had not gotten the K&N for it's sealing problem, but, I think I can live with sealing it up with grease. I have had to do that with other off road stuff. Works fine.

I don't know if I made one point clear enough. The needles that come with the K&N jet kit (Dynojet is same, i think), give you a much better low rpm response. Mine was sluggish sometimes until I got the kit. I know they charged me a chunk of change for it, but it really works well. I can throw dirt at people behind me a lot better. Much quicker thrttle response.

Trailseeker, get some tires and a jet kit at least, that's my two cents. My third penny would go to airbox mods.

nyroc,
I've got tires, jet kit and pipe, guess I'm just a power junky. I would bet most us who ride the Prarie 650's are!
One question - I see you have your needle on the 4th notch. Is that becuase of your elevation? I'm running mine on the 5th notch at 1000 feet. (Set according to Dynojet specs.)

I could wheelie very easliy in high when I had the stock tires on and had traction, but can only get it to come up in low now since putting 27x10x12 and 27x12x12 mudbugs on it. I am desperate to get this capability back for obvious reasons like 60 foot cat walks past a bunch of hondas.
Nyroc, being from NY I assume you are at sea level like me so I think I will copy your setup if you dont mind.
I had a closer look at your pics to discover you still have the stock exhaust. Do you know if there are different stages of jet kits avaliable or did you just go with the smaller ones in the standard kit.
Oh yea trailseeker, it would not wheelie from a dead stop but if you were rolling along at about 7 - 15 kms she would flip right over if I jammed the gas too hard
