Mine did this when I had it jetted wrong.
Possible air screws set wrong (2-1/4 turns out, but may work better up to 3 turns).
I bet it would happen also if you had a dirty filter. Wash, dry, and re-oil it. Don't use compressed air. A fan seems to speed up the drying process.
If someone removed the airbox and left the rubber shield over the end of the airbox inlet, that would do it.
Drowning the 650 and having water still in the diaphram orifices would do it.

Is it hard starting? My dads(new) had something wrong with the choke cable, even with the lever in the full off position, it was still part ingaged. Don't know why it couldn't be adjusted, the factory replaced it.
There should be zero hesitation.

gtcheif, a lot of 650's had a choke cable sticking problem (I would think that is really what happened to GTV's dad's 650). There is a stiffer spring that they use to fix this problem.
I would not have thought that a new one would have this problem, since kawi has straightened this problem out. But, it is definitely a possibility.

I just had it in and they said that the choke seemed fine to them, I think I'll give the dealer a call and see what they have to say about it. might be the easiest was to go. thanks alot for all your help everyone.

i was watching a tape today on the 650's tranny and the mule's tranny,from which are almost the same thing,and lost of power was one of the subject on the tape,the tape explain you how to take service your tranny step by step on all models i will ask my instructor if i could take it home and burn a copy,if you want one send me an email.by the way we was working on a mule wich it only have 5 hours and it had the same problem we are inspecting the tranny tomorrow.

Go to buykawasaki.com and look for the parts diagrams. I saw them today and it seems like the front runs a 132 main, 45 pilot and the rear runs a 138, 45 pilot. Makes me wonder why such different sizes when the two cylinders don't have a common intake. Anybody know why this is?

135 140 1600-4900' (mountain folks)
132 138 4900-8200' (denver & grand tetons)
130 132 8200-11500' ( who lives between 1 1/2- 2 miles up?)
125 130 11500'-14800' (it would be kind of tough to ride this high)

pilot jet 40
pilot air jet 130
pilot screw (main mix screw 2 1/4)
now all of this is per manual, jet sizes will probally not correspond to dynojet sizes as these will be keihn check out T.C's site for mikuni/dynojet comparisons..he did a bang up job with jetting modifications on a royal star, glad to call him one of my friends..this is his V Max site..http://www.users.qwest.net/~tcamp30/
