I am a proud new owner of the K&N air filter, got it from HMF engineering. I had heard of the loose, poor sealing fit, but when I installed mine it fit perfect. Dont know if they changed something or not, but I am happy with the fit. Anybody purchase one within the last month, if so how did it fit?

I just purchased a K&N Filter and it fit nicely... No problems. As far as tires go I went with the goodyear rawhide grips. They are a little taller than stock and have a good thick lug for all around use and most important they ride smooth... real smooth for an aggressive tire. I ride mostly in the mountains of Utah so I needed a good allaround tire...

I have been thinking about changing out the filter but havent been able to decide on which brand also. I have heard some good things about the twin air from a buddy with a 650. Do you guys think the stock filter is really that bad? It seems to me that the 650 stock filter is a pretty good piece.

I have 589mts on the rear of my Praire, I posted the weight diff when I added the 589s and did see a performance difference but it wasnt drastic.

Would like to get more info from you on the K&N filters...where did you get, cost...heard that it isnt great for keeping sand out...do you ever ride Noles or down south

I went with the Gators over the 589's merely from the weight factor. From my best guestimate, the Gators were about 20lbs. lighter for a set of four 27" for my 650. The 650 still takes off quite well and I am very happy with the hardpack performance. I only had 15 minutes to do some mudding behind my house. We got some rain finally. Its nothing that the old stockers could not go through. But the Gators went through without any squirrly action. $299.00 delivered to my door in 5 business days.

Dokyo

I bought my K&N filter from Newgate cycle.(Those guys are a bunch of Hacks)

I have riden the Knolls, Bountiful etc... but do most of my riding in American Fork Canyon, Five mile pass, Sanpete county (Mt. Pleasant, Wales, Ephraim area) and I have ridden the Paiute trail (Marysvale area). If your interested in some of those areas let me know.

I would like to find some riding areas closer to home ( I am a Davis county transplant) So I could use some of your advice.

Hey guys, I own a K&N air filter for my 650, the first tim I put it on I realized a was had withthat damn thing! It does fit great, but when putng the air box lid back in place I found it harder then before to close it properly. So I deceded to investigate a bit, I soon found out that the air box lid touches the filtering element of the filtr at 2 places and the rubber frame of the filter at 1 or 2 other places. this means that whne I put the lid on it pushes my filter down about 1/8 to 3/16 inches, this is a lot of stress for the filtering element when you think of the vibration going on in this particular area of the quad (air box)plus th extra stress on the latches and latches attachements on the bottom part of the air box. So decided not to use the filter being afraid to break the bike's air box or the filter wich costed 85$ canadian. Damn I now am back to initial factory fiter. I contacted my dealer for info on this air filter but he did'nt have any yet, I hope for a replacement filter that will fit, or a refound. It looks like the filter was made up-side down, the filtering elements fins should be off-set dwn ward and not upwards, this would eliminate the problem and the filter would be great.

any-body else noticed this problem???

I know every body has heard this before but some refuse to believe it. K&N filters don't filter worth a flip. Don't believe me? Do this little experiment. Take some light grease or heavy foam filter oil and smear it around inside your air box downstream of the K&N. Ride your bike for a couple of weeks or several rides whichever comes first. Pull your filter and check out the crud that is stuck to the layer of grease. Those of you who ride where the humidity is always above 70% and it rains enough to keep the dust down on the trails may not find anything. I guarantee the rest of you will be shocked or amazed. I've always driven diesels and bought a K&N a few years ago. The first thing I noticed was grit in the intake plenum where the crankcase vent kept a layer of oil on it. The second thing I noticed was an increase in Silicon in my oil analysis. It went from 2-3ppm to 15 then 23ppm. I changed the oil and greased the heck out of the sealing surface of the filter thinking it was leaking around the gasket. Did Nothing to alleviate the grit and the silicon count started back up. Ditched the K&N and both problems went away. Did you ever wonder why most motorcycle mechanics say not to use a K&N in sand? If it won't stop a sand particle what the heck will it stop? Rocks, bugs and small birds?
When questioned about the increase in Si K&N says that there filter oil causes the increase and it is not dirt. Hogwash! An acquaintance of mine doctored a good sample of oil with about 5% K&N filter oil and sent it in for analysis. Guess what? Silicon less than 2ppm. HMMMM!
On top of all that for my application there was no noticable change in power.
THink about it! How do you make a filter element move more air without a large increase in surface area(which K&N doesn't do by the way)? You have to open up the air passages which equals lower filter efficiency. Conventional foam filters filter well because they create a maze that forces the dirt particles to change direction hundreds of times before it gets to the other side chances are it will hit a part of the filter and stick to the oil before it gets all the way through. Hold a K&N up to the light. You can see through the cotton picking thing! I know all about the microscopic threads that run across the openings. If there were enough of them to do much good you wouldn't be able to see through the damn thing!
Sorry for the rant! K&N is, IMHO, a ripoff that has lasted this long because of very clever marketing that depends on the gullibilty and ignorance of the average consumer.

Back to the original topic. I ordered a TwinAir from my dealer and he got me a UNI. It's just a little small and you must stretch it slightly once clamped in the frame so that it contacts the edges of the airbox well enough to provide a good seal.

Man what a rip off not only does it not fit right, it does not filter right, I've been had, I new the principle of more air, bigger the holes, but thought that K&N had new type of material or oil wich would allow fot better air flow without the chace of killing your engine, to think I paid for this kind of trouble!!!! I will probebly go fo a twin air filter then or Uni, not sure yet, man I just lost 85$ to the hands of criminals

Thanks for the advice man
