Air Filter for V-Twin 650
#1
Ok...I have become accustomed to my 650 and now looking to increase its performance so I do not lose anything when I go to real tires instead of the temp stock dunlops...looking at titan 589s. Heard after-market airfilter will do wonders...does anyone have recommendations on which one to get...i have done a search for previous topics in this forum as I thought i seen something on it and found nothing...I have heard the following:
K&N: Provides a performance gain and helps gas mileage...does not fit snug and isnt recommended by my dealer if I ride in sand...being in Utah and loving the sand I would say I do ride in sand alot...love trails and hills...but I do hit the sand...any comments on the info I picked up here?
Unifilter: Will provide performance boost...fits right...hard to find...if you recommend this one please tell me where I can get...my dealer says that uni doesnt make one for 650...I have heard different
Heard there is another one out there that works pretty good ... "Hill" or something like that...if you recommend this one please provide info ... thanks
I am looking to get an after market air intake from Diamond G racing once they are available...am told that this two mods will more then make up for anything lost do to the new tires...dont really know if i need pipes, cdi box or new cam...might make it to responsive in the rough stuff...almost ended on my back once already :-)
Any info or help here would be greatly appreciated...LOVE THIS QUAD

UNI does make one because I have one in there now. It works well but now that it is breathing better it has a hesitaion when you first hit the throttle I have a jet kit comming from K&N which is Dyno Jet through rockymountainatv.com. It was 51 with shipping that was even cheaper than what my dealer cost is. If you go to www.unifilter.com. They have the Part # there and a price I don't know if you can order directly from there or not. I just got it through my dealer he sold it for 23 but with shipping that was cheaper.

Ok...check this out...went to the dealership and spoke to the person in charge of their parts department. Told him I would like a Unifilter for the Kawi...he informed me that the Unifilter adds nothing to your system that a stock air filter wouldnt provide...basically there would be no performance gain. The only filter that would give an increase to performance would be the K&N. I told him that I had heard the K&N didnt set right and wasnt that great for sand...he told me to put grease around it and it should set fine...seem to me like allot of dirt would settle on the grease and make a mess...anyones thoughts on this or input...does anyone know if the Uni does add a performance gain...any input would be appreciated...thanks

Can't say for sure on the 650, as I have not added one yet, but the UNI did wonders in my Polaris. As for the K&N, I sure wouldn't want to pay that much for a filter and then has to grease it up with a mess to make if right.

Dokyo, I am in a similar situation. I put 26" Titan 589s on my 650 and have noticed a power loss, but it seems to me that clutch mods would be a better choice than spending money on your mill (my opinion). I have seen posts on here that verify what your thread has stated, Unifilter fits good, K&N doesn't seat right. A jet kit will more than likely be needed with a new filter and air box mods. When you put your aftermarket parts on, please let us know the results.

Dokyo, my Titans are 26x9x12 on the front and 26x12x12 on the rear. These tires are VERY heavy. I saw it posted somewhere that they are 15lbs heavier per tire than stock(OUCH! ! !) They are six ply so there is very little give in them, which takes a lot of the 650s plushness away. They have almost completely taken away the 650s tendency to dive in the corners. In my opinion, the 650s front suspension is too weak, but a guy can fix that with the progressive suspension front preload kit ($170). There is a noticeable power loss due to the increase in size, weight, and aggressive tread pattern. I believe some clutch mods would help that out, but I am not familiar with cvt trannys---YET!!! I think some heavier springs in the cvt which would make it engage harder would be a definite asset. I plan on building a lift kit for mine in the near future too. Also, I noticed a vibration transmitted through the handlebars at higher speeds, but with some help from Nyroc, I think I've gotten that one beat.
As for how they perform, well, lets just say that I am very happy. This weekend was my first run with them, and they are horny!!!!We were riding in the mountains and came across patches of snow that were fairly deep. I would chew through the snow until the quad almost got stuck, throw it in reverse and back up, no problem. Try doing that with your stockers!!!!! I purposely found the nastiest hills I could find and crawled up them with ease. Mud didn't seem to faze these tires at all. They love the stuff!!!! I'm in Canada, so the price is a lot more than in the States. I paid just under $600 for the set mounted out the door at a local tire shop.
Good points
1. 6 ply-no more flats(hopefully).
2. aggressive tread pattern for mud and snow.
3. keeps the 650 from diving.
4. huge rim guards on these tires.
5. will fit on your stock rims.(mine did)
6. will clear your fuel tank guard.
7. you will have the coolest looking ride around!
Bad points
1. they weigh a ton.
2. they really sap your power.
3. they ride rough.(who cares)
4. a little harder to steer.
5. if anyone follows you thru a mudhole, they get roosted-wait-
that should be in the good points category. LOLOLOL!!!
I hope this gives you a good overview of what these tires are like. If you want any more info, let me know. FYI, the twinair filter sells for $21.
