mastrblstr,

did you remove the shim or replace it with a thinner one? Looks as though I have two shims in mine, wonderin if I ought to leave em both out and see what the deflection looks like!

At 500 mi. or so mine had 2 shims. One was .024 the other was .039. Pulled the .039 left the .024 and measured right at minimums when done. Of coarse yours may not work out the same. Depends on how much deflection you start with. Didn't measure mine to begin with because I new it was loose. Just pulled one shim, then measured. Got real lucky first time.

Fishhead, I only had one shim in mine when I took it apart. It was .055in thick. I replaced it with a .024in shim and my deflection was nuts on. The rule of thumb is: .004in. change in spacer thickness equals about .051.in change in belt deflection. I would measure your belt deflection, measure both your shims and go from there. A good pair of vernier calipers is sure handy to check those shims. I got all these figures out of the service manual, and their calculations seem to be pretty close.

Pretty friggin complicated? Whats the worst case? If the belt is to tight it will creep at idle? To loose it squalls and maybe won't do wheelies. Kawasaki must of done this to try to shore up dealers bottom lines, so far I just don't care. Riding the 650 is a blast.

I adjusted mine to what I felt was .87 inches, but it could have been just a little tight. It has no shims in it at this adjustment.

at first it did creep at idle, and squealed at idle too. But with 50 miles on it like that, the squeal and creep are both gone. The squeal would dissapear at takeoff.

It works awsome now. So, I guess it is not such a bad thing to have it a little tight. I wanted to make it go longer without an adjustment. It grabs wonderfully well now. I love it.

Nyroc,

How many shims did you have originally? I had two removed the thickest and will finish assembly tommorrow. Trying to avoid the new belt ntil this phantom gates belt appears!

Thanks for the input...
