I have been looking for a new quad for a while now. My very first choice to look at was the Mojave because of the engine, size and fully manual gearbox. I have yet to locate a 2000 but I have seen a few used ones. Also, I rode a friend's Lakota the other day. I was very impressed with the quick handling in tight woods. It was a blast to ride there but, it lacked a lot everywhere else, compared to my old Quadracer 250. In short, what I would like to know is, how much better is the Mojave compared to the Lakota and how well does it really hold it's own (stock) out there with the big boys (blaster, worrior, 300ex, 400ex, sport 400, banshee)? I like the $3,995 sticker, but I don't want to get spanked all day, and I don't want to spend a fortune in mods. I have saw a lot of bad press on the Mojave and I don't believe everything I read. I would appreciate honest real world replies.

DON'T MAKE ME BUY ON FRIDAY & TRADE ON MONDAY!!HA! HA!

I am a kaw dealer i have had good service out of the mojave i have sold . The only mods my customers have done is change rear sprocket to pick up allout open speed but great for handling as a stock unit. also kawi has built this unit for 10 years, so it is a proven performer. only thing i can say is so far so good and you don't change a good thing at a good price! d.j.
p.s.: rumor has kx250 quad 2-stroke to be announced sept. of 2000

CHAINSAW, I may just eagerly await the prospect of a new 2-stroke from kawi. It's good to see 1 company resonding to the need for more choices in a new sport quad. Right now there is only about 1 choice in a quad for each domain and rider preference. Chosing is like do you want an apple, orange, pear, plum or peach and when you get it home, you may find out it's a lemon for where you ride and what you prefer.
I rode a Mojave that belonged to a friend back in the late 80's. I had an 89 250R & a Quadracer 250 then. So, you know it left something to be desired. But, I haven't rode one in so long that I couldn't compare it to the Lakota I rode the other day.
Oh, and by the way, that Mojave was the only quad I really wiped out on in a bad way. I rolled it on the 1st test ride the day he brought it home. I screamed down the dirt road, went to cut a U back, missed a gear, thought no prob, chassis too narrow and short, rolled right over and played dead, and never felt like it was going to at all. I got up surpised, spiting out a mouthfull of dirt&gravel and felling bad about scuffing the brandnewin'. That's my Mojave X-File...lol !!!

the mojave is not a straight line performer. it has good power for it's engine size, but is a little heavy. i can just edge out 300ex's, but blasters, warriors, 400ex's will beat you in a drag race. you will be able to keep up if not run away from most quads in the sport class when the trails get tight and twisty. the mojave is not as bad as that article you probably read says. to put it in perspective a blaster(being a two stroke) should run with 4 stroke bikes with approx 1.5 times the eng displacement, the warrior has 100cc advantage, and the 300ex has a 50cc advantage(and it will still outrun a 300ex)!!! bottom line is if you want all out speed from a stock bike go with something like a banshee, 250r, ds650 or 400ex(which will soon be destroyed by up and comming real race quads) if price is an issue, you can get pretty good deals on used banshees. just remember two stroke bike will require a lot more maint. i have a banshee and got my mojave because i wanted a good second bike that will pretty much keep running with basic upkeep. hope this helps.

I race a 89 mojave. I bought it pretty much stock and thought it to be one sweet machine. It won't run with the big boys stock but you will find it to be peppy and a great trail machine. My suggestion is to buy a GOOD used one and ad these parts. Holeshot tires, suppertrap exuast, and K&N air filter. I think you would find these three things coupled with some other parts you might find usefull to add up and make one heck of a great machine.

Hey Duster,

I have had my '00 Mojave for about a month now. Just got the initial 10 hour service performed on it by the dealer. If you want a good trail bike that will zip through the narrow stuff this bike is for you. I second what everyone else is saying about if you want all out just speed. Although the bike does have some very good pickup for a 250 class machine. I do wish Kawi would have put a 300 in it but I am more than happy with the bike. Also don't know if anyone else had this problem but I asked a dealer in North Mississippi to find me one in the crate. He found ONE in Mississippi and that dealer wouldn't even give it to him. The dealer had to drive to middle TN to pick one up for me... Some say they are hard bikes to get ahold of.

Hope this helps,

Depakote
'00 Mojave
