The compression release opens 2 exhaust valves. The exhaust rocker arm has arm on it and the decompressor is connected to the cam and it contacts the arm and opens the valves slightly. I agree about keeping the valve clearance specs the same as stock. The only time you should have different specs is with a performance cam. Mine are now set at .04 intake and .06 exhaust.

Now I see why are forum has gotten so darn slow, we all just agree on every thing to much. We need a hekler to get that old thick blood pumping again.

Well some one else has to be the hekler, I just can't think of what needs to be bashed

I could start spelling stock, stalk again Boy am I boring!!

Aw man, it looks like I don't get to be the "heckler" this time. My thanks goes to you all for the accurate responses . As it turns out it was the valve's adjustment making the "tick" sound, but thats not all my problem. The cam chain tensioner is also bad, AGAIN! Thanks for that info too. Has anyone ever sucessfully removed and reinstalled one of them??? I replaced the original one about a month ago and my new one has flipped (can't be fixed I hear). I only turn clockwise as the manual reads, but when I raise the tensioner mechanism the screwdriver pushes the spring through and poof its shot.

Thanks Again.........

Maybe your valve seats are worn? Well, thats all I could come up with. My friends xr500 had a very loud ticking noise in his top end just like you described. We don't know what caused it though. Sorry for being of no help.
