Kawasaki did intend to have the winch mounted lower in the frame and the cable go through the slots. I have a picture from kawi of one of the original 650s with the winch mounted low and the fairlead mounted over where the slots are. Not sure if the slots were cut out though.

I'm surprised kawi didn't remedy this mistake on the 03 models.

Cut the slots out and make a mount out of a piece of plate steel.
Chap solid and reliable. A generic fairlead will line up with the two bolt holes on either sede of the slots that you just cut out .
Winch is down really low and has to be cleaned of mud often though.

Waaaaaay ahead of you EXT. For anyone who's interested, this took an afternoon, including chasing parts, total cost for the mounting plate... $4.24 including tax. Looks like Kawasaki is getting it's 2nd winch mount return in as many weeks! Now back to the garage for wiring.winch mount

Nyroc, b4 you ask, you can have this pic too. Looks sweet doesn't it? Just like I'd hoped and dreamed for my entire life. I took a series of pics as I was figuring this out. I might do a quickie page if anyone is interested. It's really easy to put together but it does get a little tight towards the end.

i guess i dont understand, I just bought a ramsey winch, and it came with a warn instal kit that fit it perfect. holes all matched up, the winch faced forward not upwards like i see these installed, and the rollers fit like a dream. And it cast like $35. if you install through the holes will it not cause a problem with the winch winding correctly and bunch up all in one spot.

Zebadie,
Would it be asking too much to have you snap a picture or two so I could see what your install looks like? If necessary, email to me at dvetter@zoomnet.net.

Thanks!
